Ard Chúram on the fundraising trail as they push for a new Alzheimer Centre by 2020
THE Ard Chúram Day Centre in Listowel is on the fundraising trail this month as organisers seek to collect the necessary funds for the construction of the proposed new Alzheimer Day Care Centre.
The new centre is currently with Kerry County Council for planning permission and it is hoped that it will be constructed in 2019 and become fully operational in the summer of 2020.
The cost of the new Centre fully fitted out is expected to be in excess of €700k.
To help with the costs, the 63 members of Ard Chúram’s new choral group will hold a concert in St Mary’s Church Listowel on Friday November 23 at 8pm.
The choral group was started with the initial granting of aid to the Ard Chúram from Kerry County Council under their Healthy Ireland Initiative. Mairéad Hanlon was appointed as a Community coordinator for all North Kerry’s over 50’s Social Groups and from the interaction and discussions with these groups the plan for a fundraising choral group was conceived and born.
“The vibrancy and enthusiasm from these 63 people is living proof of their support for a new Alzheimer Centre and their willingness to be engaged and to contribute to the well-being of North Kerry’s Communities,” said Mairéad.
The group state that the case for a new Alzheimer Unit in North Kerry is beyond question. The Centre for Economic & Social Research on Dementia in NUI Galway has concluded that there are 340 people with Dementia (including Alzheimers) living in North Kerry and that the HSE estimates that approximately 100 of these people would be suitable to attend a day care service.
Finbarr Mawe who is the director and treasurer with the Ard Chúram group has advised that there are intensive fundraising plans in place for 2019 and that Ard Chúram has applied to the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle for their next year’s nomination.
The Concert in St Mary’s Church is the first fundraiser.
The door prize on the night is two tickets to the Late Late Show and organisers of the concert at Ard Chúram said that they are very grateful to Canon Declan O’Connor for allowing the group the use of the Church and for his unstinting support of the Alzheimer Day Care Centre project.
If you’re in and around the area, be sure to call in for a great night of music.
