‘We need action on speeding right now’

THREE years to wait for road improvements in Iveragh Park in Killorglin is simply too long to wait according to local residents who are pleading with Kerry County Council to install speed cushions in the local estate.

Iveragh Park is the second largest local authority estate in south Kerry and a huge volume of traffic passes through it. The location of Killorglin Family Resource Centre is one of the reasons for this, while adjoining Cloverhill Close estate is also accessed via Iveragh Park.

Residents claim that many of the vehicles using the estate are speeding and they fear that a serious accident will occur. Kerry County Council has funding in place of over €112,000 for road resurfacing and footpaths in 2021 but the residents want this work to be completed much sooner and they want speed cushions to be installed as well.

Chairperson of Iveragh Park/ Cloverhill Residents Association, Lorna Richardson, said the majority of residents are in favour of speed cushions – they are less noisy than the traditional speed ramps.

“There’s lots of coming and goings in the estate and speeding is becoming more of an issue. We feel that we are an accident waiting to happen,” said Lorna.

Signs have been erected and letters were also sent to motorists who use the estate but these measures have not worked.

“We need to get these works done as soon as possible. Three years is too long,” she said.

The residents met with local councillors to raise their concerns in recent weeks.

Cllr Michael Cahill said that while the funding for the resurfacing and footpaths is welcome, the residents also need to have their speed issues addressed

“There is no point putting in speed ramps now if the place is to be dug up in 2021. The council needs to bring forward the funding and get all works done.”
