Tralee fall just short to Dungarvan

MUNSTER JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 3

Dungarvan 20 Tralee 17

TRALEE lost their top spot in the J3 table when Dungarvan took the points in a rip roaring contest last Sunday.

Tralee came into the game with confidence having won their first four league games in-a-row. The difficult away trip to Waterford was a step too far for them, however, as the home side edged them out in a game that could have gone either way.

The Dungarvan try scorers were Daniel Slevin, Martin Houlihan and David Hickey, with Hickey also adding a conversion and a penalty. The excellent Eoin O’Carroll replied with two tries for Tralee while Sean O’Sullivan also touched down as well as adding a conversion.

Tralee are still in a very healthy position in the J3 table as they now lie in second place, just two points behind leader Mitchelstown.

Killorglin 15 Dunmanway 0

KILLORGLIN secured their second league win of the season when they put bottom side Dunmanway to the sword at Ballymalis last Sunday.

The home side needed a bounce back after suffering a comprehensive defeat to local rivals Tralee in the last round of the competition and they did so in assured style with a controlled and disciplined display.

Killorglin had a panel of 19 players to pick from on the day and played a good brand of positive attacking rugby. Central to their victory was their ability to launch an attacking platform on the back of aggressive defence, and this ultimately enabled them to get the scores that mattered.

The conditions were perfect for attacking rugby, and Kyle Byrne touched down for a well worked team try in the first half after some persistent pressure on the Dunmanway line.

Killorglin continued to carry the fight to Dunmanway at every opportunity but some excellent defence from the visitors kept them at bay. Their persistent pressure eventually paid off though when Luke O’Shea slotted over a decent penalty to see his side take an 8-0 lead in at the half-time break.

The second half of the game continued in a similar pattern with Killorglin dominating proceedings once more. James Falconer scorched over for his first ever try for his side and with O’Shea unerring with the resultant conversion, the home side ran out as comfortable fifteen point winners.

The result sees Killorglin move to seventh place in the table with a tough away trip to Ennis to come next weekend.
