CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR

Shannow Women’s Group are organising a Christmas Craft Fair, in the Abbeydorne­y Community Centre on Sunday 2ns December from 11am to 4pm. Anyone interested in taking a table needs to contact Shannow Family Resource Centre on 066 7198018 to get a booking form. Places will only be secured once booking form and payment received. There is a fee of €20 a table and a discount of €5 if you are supplying your own table.

On the day there will be: * A sponsored Door Prize * Raffle tickets on sale * A host of different Crafts and some Home Baking * Possibly a visit from Santa himself for any little Craft goers out there. This is a fundraiser for Shannow Family Resource Centre, so please come along and support it.

CHRISTMAS GALA FLOWER ARRANGING

Shannow Gardening Group in conjunctio­n with their tutor Kathleen Barrett is holding a Christmas Gala Flower arranging morning on Thursday 6th December @ 11am. Open to all members of the community so come along and make a Christmas Wreath and a Christmas Table Arrangemen­t. Bring your own greenery, bowls or any extras you may need. If you do not have any, the materials can be purchased on the day.

ARD CÚRAM FUNDRAISER

Those who enjoy a good night’s musical entertainm­ent are assured of such on this Friday 23rd. November when the Ard Churam Choir and Friends present an evening of music in St. Mary’s Church, Listowel at 8pm. The 60 members of this new Choral Group are fundraisin­g for a new Alzheimer Dementia unit which it is hoped will be operationa­l in Listowel in 2020. Local parishione­rs involved are singers Gerald Buckley and Ann D Finucane and fundraiser/director Kitty McElligott. Tickets are still available at €10 for a good night in aid of a good cause.

THE HONEY SPIKE

After playing to packed houses for four nights in St. John’s, Listowel, the cast and crew of Tarbert Theatre Players are looking forward to a well earned rest. Following numerous requests, a DVD of the Honey Spike will be made available. The DVD costing €10 must be pre-ordered and pre-paid in advance from any of the staff at Tarbert Pharmacy. The deadline for ordering is Friday 30th. November. The DVD will make a nice Christmas present for home or abroad.

COMMUNITY CENTRE

The Community Centre at this time of year caters for activities for young and old and of all age groups on a daily and weekly basis as follows;

Monday; Unislim from 6 to 7pm with Ann Marie Naughton and children’s dancing with Johnny Cronin.

Tuesday; Junior Charlie exercise class for adults from 1 to 2pm Rince with Siomha Wall from 5.30 to 7.30pm

Wednesday Rince with Siomha Wall from 5.30 to 7.30pm; Bingo weekly from 8.30pm

Thursday; Available

Friday; Parent and Toddler group from 9.45 to 11.45am.

Youth Club 8 to 9.30pm Pre and After School Club, five days a week, morning and evening with Suzanne Harrison.

The Centre is also widely used by various groups for activities and meetings. The weekly Bingo continues to be well supported and is the main source of revenue. The Centre is also available for funerals and aftercare receptions and as such is a great facility centrally located. All enquiries and bookings can be made to Leslie Pledge at 087 9243737.

Tarbert Macra will be holding their Movember Fundraisin­g night on Saturday 24th.November at 9 pm in the Swanky Bar. There will be raffle prizes and a great night’s fun for all in aid of a good cause.

WINDOW ON THE PAST

Some 700 Kerrymen died in the First World War of 1914-1918. Stephen Cregan of Ardmore, Tarbert was probably the last Kerryman to die on the battlefiel­d. He died on the 9th. November 1918 two days before the Armistice of 11th. November when the guns ceased firing. He was buried with full military honours in Suresnes Military Cemetery, five miles west of Paris. His uncle Michael had fought with the Union army in the American Civil War. His older brother Jerry survived the war and continued to serve with the American army, retiring as a master sergeant. He returned to Tarbert married local girl Nora Hanrahan in 1937 and they reared a family of 8 children, four of whom now live in the United States. Their neighbour Michael Pattwell from Kilpadogue also enlisted in the U.S Infantry and died of wounds aged 25 in January 1919 and is buried in St. Mihiel Cemetery, Thiacourt, France. there will be draws for very attractive prizes. It is also a good social occasion as it facilitate­s people meeting up with friends and acquaintan­ces and the chat over the cupán tae is always appreciate­d. Photos of family groups can be obtained in the Santa House. The support of the community is necessary for its success and that support would be much appreciate­d. Donations towards the event would be very welcome.

SANTA VISIT

Santa will make his usual visit to Halla Inse Bhán on Sale of Work day, arriving at 2.30pm on Sunday next and will be greeted on arrival by a group of young musicians. Throughout the afternoon children from near and far will be able to visit him in his Santa Grotto and have their photos taken with him as well as receiving their gifts. Waiting time is usually very short and in the meantime people can sit in comfort and enjoy the proceeding­s of the day in the Halla.

COMHALTAS

The craobh has entered for the Pléaracha na nÓg competitio­n, the provincial finals of which will be held at Freemount on Sunday, December 2. Pléaracha is a 30 minute stage show of traditiona­l entertainm­ent including music, singing, dancing and story telling. Temampall an Ghleanntái­n Comhaltas last participat­ed in this competitio­n in 2015. The local group consisting of almost forty members is now preparing for the event. Go néirí an tádh leo.

Young members of our craobh are invited to play a few tunes on the arrival of Santa at the Sale of Work at Halla Inse Bán on Sunday, November 25. A new nine week term of music classes is now commencing and class fees will be taken up on Monday next. Any class members from last year who missed out on the first term this year will be most welcome to join in now. Some young musicians from the craobh were invited guests at the “Handed Down” traditiona­l night at the Heritage Centre, Scartaglin on Saturday last and performed very well.

LIGHTS FOR CHARITY

The Noonan Christmas Lights for Charity at Tullig North will be officially switched on at 4pm on Saturday next, November 24. Present on the occasion will be some members of the All Ireland winning Limerick Senior Hurling Team and Ladies Junior Football Team and of course Santa will be making an appearance.

TIDY TOWNS

A very industriou­s team has been busy for the past number of Saturdays giving the area around the grotto a pre- Winter makeove. Shrubs were pruned, ground cover planted and exposed areas covered. Well done to those who turned up each day. The Rediscover­y Centre workshops were an outstandin­g success. Thanks to the school for facilitati­ng the project and to the children for participat­ing.
