St Marys captain wants team to build on success

-

A MAN of few words generally as he admits himself but St Marys captain Darragh O’Sullivan felt he was fortunate in the dressing room St Marys have at present to be able to keep his own counsel.

“You don’t need to say too much in our dressing room especially when you have leaders like Bryan (Sheehan) and Denis (Daly) driving everything on for us,” O’Sullivan said of being the captain of St Marys’ history achieving side last Saturday.

For O’Sullivan, even after last year’s win over the same opposition in Portmagee, there was a sense of wanting to get straight back into the swing of things.

“Just for me personally when you finish one year there is that desire to go out and start playing again next year. We base ourselves every year on the South Kerry Championship and regard it as a failure almost if we don’t win it,” he said.

O’Sullivan acknowledged the work his namesake with Dromid, Declan, had done with their opponents and feels they will be back challenging again next year.

“Declan has done phenomenal work with Dromid to take them to where they are at present. We heard all year how much they were gunning for this and we expect them to be back again next year,” the St Marys captain said.

He said that it was impossible to please everyone as regards the fixture list in general but felt the delay in starting the competition allowed both Daniel Daly and him time to recover from injuries prior to its commencement. 2019 ambitions would seem to centre strongly on consolidation for the club.

“Definitely you want to try and stay in Division One of the County League. We brought on a pile of young players this year and I don’t think we have played the same 15 in any game this year. You hope that those players will push you again in the New Year.”
