Kerry captaincy will be discussed at Convention

THE method of how the Kerry senior football and hurling teams select their team captain will be discussed at annual Convention next Monday.

The item will be on the Clár as the ‘Selection of the Kerry captain (for all adult teams, football & hurling) from 2020 onwards). The discussion will consider either staying with present polic, whereby the county champions have the right to nominate the captain, or to change the existing system to allow team management select the captain.

It is important to note that this item is for discussion only among delegates, and that no binding decision will be taken at Convention.

Convention 2018 will be held on December 10 in the Rose Hotel Tralee at 7.30pm.

County Convention Booklets are available for collection from the County Board offices. Arrange collection of same and give them to your delegates attending Convention. The County Board Strategic Plan Book will also be included with the Convention Books.

APPROVED Gaelic Football Playing Rules for Experiment­ation (November 2018)

1: Hand Pass To introduce a restrictio­n of three consecutiv­e passes of the ball with the fist or open hand by players of the team in possession. The playing of the ball by open hand(s) or fist for the purpose of scoring a point shall not be deemed a hand pass. Once an opponent touches the ball in play, this will be considered a break in the hand pass chain. Penalty: Free kick from where the foul occurred except as provided under the Exceptions in Rule 2.2.

2: Side-line Kick The ball shall be played forward from the kick except where the kick is inside the 20m line of the opposing team. Penalty: Cancel side-line kick. Throw-in the ball in accordance with Rule 2.2 Exception (v)

3: The Advanced Mark To extend the applicatio­n of the Mark to the clean catching of the ball from a kick in play (i.e. not from set-play) delivered by the kicker on or beyond the opposing team’s 45m line, that travels a minimum of 20 metres and without it touching the ground. - The applicatio­n of the Mark shall be standardis­ed as follows Fifteen seconds shall be allowed for a Free to be taken from a Mark. A player shall signify he is taking a Mark as per current Rule 2.12 where the ‘player shall signify to the Referee he is taking the ‘Advanced Mark’ A score may be made from a free awarded for a Mark in all cases. Exception: A free-kick from a Mark shall be taken from the hand(s) only.

4: Sin-Bin To have a Penalty on the day for a Black Card Infraction by ordering off the offending player for 10 minutes in a Sin Bin. The 10 minutes shall commence with the ordering off to the sin-bin and shall end on the expiry of the 10 minutes, irrespecti­ve of delays. The 10 minutes shall be monitored by the 4th Official, where operating, and otherwise by the Referee. The player may only re-join the game at a break in play and on the instructio­n of the 4th Official or Referee. A subsequent Black Card Infraction shall be penalised by the showing of a Black Card followed by a Red Card. In this case there shall be no substituti­on allowed. - The maximum number of substituti­ons in normal time to return to five.

5: Kick-Out from 20m Line The kick-out shall be taken off the ground from a point on the part of the 20m line that forms the semi-circular arc. All players, other than the Goalkeeper (and another player if the goalkeeper is not taking the kickout) shall be outside the 20m line, outside the arc and 13m from the ball until it has been kicked. Penalty: Cancel kick-out. Throw-in the ball on defenders’ 20m line in front of the scoring space. COISTE Chontae Chiarrai CLG has one Higher Education GAA Referees’ Bursary for the 2018/19 Academic Year. The Bursary will be awarded to a registered student of the Institute of Technology Tralee. The Bursary is awarded by Coiste Chontae Chiarrai CLG to a successful applicant who is currently participat­ing as a referee and officiatin­g for Coiste Chontae Chiarrai CLG games.

The following are the terms and conditions of the bursary scheme:

1. The applicatio­n is open to members of Coiste Chontae Chiarrai CLG who are registered full time students at IT Tralee and who are active participan­ts in IT Tralee GAA Club.

2. The successful applicant must be available to referee games for IT Tralee GAA Club when required.

3. To qualify recipients must have obtained a Club Level Referee Certificat­e and a Referee In-Service Course Certificat­e (where possible).

4. To qualify recipients must be participat­ing as a referee and officiatin­g Coiste Chontae Chiarrai CLG games and also remain active following award of the bursary. 5. The bursary is valued at €600 6. A condition of receiving the bursary is the demonstrat­ion of a commitment to the Higher Education GAA Club as a referee or official.

7. Those who are already in receipt of College GAA scholarshi­ps/ bursaries are not eligible to apply.

8. Bursaries are awarded for the 2018/19 Academic Year only.

Con also served as Treasurer and Registrar for Kerry Coiste na nÓg. Con was a familiar and friendly face in Fitzgerald Stadium where he looked after the Public Address system in the stadium. He took such pride in his work and kept us entertaine­d for hours in the Press Box. A gentleman who will be greatly missed.
