WINDOWONTHEPAST

100 years ago and Ireland and the rest of the world was experiencing the worst flu epidemic the world has ever known. The pandemic known as the Spanish Flu, because it was first noticed in Spain, lasted about a year from the Spring of 1918 to the Spring of 1919 and was to result in the death of more than 50 million people. In Ireland it is estimated that over 20,000 people died in the epidemic which was referred to as the Black Flu. More than 800,000 people in Ireland or one in every three became seriously ill from the virus. It was an era before antibiotics and any and every remedy was tried by an overstretched medical service. The Flu came in two waves, the first a mild wave and the second a more severe type of illness. Kildare had the highest mortality rate and Clare had the lowest. The Kerryman reported that all the schools were closed in the Listowel district due to the flu epidemic with no case reported in the town but prevalent to the east and west. In Ballylongford it was reported that half a dozen people were down but in none of the cases were the symptoms dangerous. In Tarbert it was reported that only one or two cases were noticed and the schools remained open. By the summer of 1919 the epidemic had vanished as quickly as it had appeared having ‘burned itself out’.
