Éamonn opens new chapter in sporting life at Killocrim NS
A BRIGHT new chapter in the sporting life of Killocrim National School was celebrated on Friday as the principal of a west Kerry secondary school arrived to great fanfare to officially open the new all-weather pitch.
His arrival was marked by great cheer as it was none other than former Kerry senior footballer and manager, Éamonn Fitzmaurice.
Éamonn said he was delighted to cut the ribbon on a project that will so obviously boost physical health and sporting talent at the 107-pupil school.
“This project is a product of the combined efforts of many hard-working stakeholders, namely a dedicated fundraising committee comprised of parents, pupils, members of the Board of Management and people from the wider community,” Principal Catherine O’Driscoll said.
“These worked tirelessly to help achieve the aim of providing this resource for the benefit of the 107 girls and boys who attend Killocrim National School,” Ms O’Driscoll added.
She said the school envisages the facility will have ‘far-reaching’ benefits for generations of pupils and that it is already being utilised in many areas of the curriculum.
“Pupils use the pitch to consolidate their Health Promoting Schools and Daily Mile Initiatives, helping them towards achieving Active School Status.” The cost was met through funding and fundraising.
