Annascaul lights up with festive spirit
ANNASCAUL got into the spirit of the festive season on Saturday evening with the lighting of the community Christmas tree, which brought a sparkle to the village and the large gathering of locals who attended despite the biting wind and rain.
The official switch-on was left in the hands of local footballers Colm Moriarty and Killian Falvey who helped Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne to Kerry Colleges O’Sullivan Cup final victory only the previous day, and in September they won a place in history with the five-in-a-row Kerry Minors.
The Christmas tree, which as always was donated by Courtney Brothers of Annascaul, was organised by Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group who have had a busy year during which the village again increased its score in the national competition.
However, better results in the Tidy Towns competition is only one part of what the group aims to achieve and they are currently working on a long term plan to make Annascaul not just look its best but also to be more environmentally friendly.
Since last spring group members have been working with Woodrow Sustainable Solutions to draw up a coordinated plan for Annascaul, which will be put into effect over the next three years. A first draft of the plan, which is being funded by SKDP, has just been completed and its scope ranges from improving the presentation of streets and public places in the villate, to celebrating heritage, monitoring wildlife, sustainable planting and how to involve the community in decision making.
The management committee will finalise the plan in the new year and looks forward to working with everyone in Annascaul to put the blueprint into action in the coming years.
