Abbeyfeale win Moynihan Cup final while Causeway take O’Connor Cup

- BY JASON O’CONNOR

THERE were mixed fortunes for Abbeyfeale’s Colaiste Ide and Iosef last week in two Kerry Post-Primary Schools Final as they won the Moynihan Cup (Senior B) in Currans last Wednesday before missing out on adding the Joe O’Connor Cup Final (U-16½ B) two days later in Finuge.

They denied Pobalscoil Inbhear Sceine of Kenmare the chance to retain the Moynihan Cup at the Centre of Excellence despite conceding the first four points of proceedings.

They recovered to trail by 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time with the conditions working in their favour in the second period as a brace of points from Rory O’Brien had them in front for the first time at 0-8 to 0-7. It looked like the game would end honours even when points from Cian O’Connor and Donnacha Crowley had Inbhear Sceine level at 0-10 apiece but Eoin Murphy’s point was the decisive score in giving Colaiste Ide and Iosef an 0-11 to 0-10 win.

However, the Abbeyfeale school lost out by 3-8 to 1-7 in Friday’s Joe O’Connor Cup Final having trailed to Causeway Comprehensive School by 1-6 to 1-5 at half-time.

An evenly matched game otherwise saw the North Kerry school better able to take their scores than their West Limerick counterparts when it mattered despite the best efforts of Duagh’s Ted Moloney for Colaiste Ide agus Iosef.

Causeway’s Kevin Goulding played a key role in Causeway’s win as two late goals prevented the game from requiring extra-time which looked apparent late on.

Meanwhile, in the Munster Senior ‘C’ FC quarter-final last Thursday St Joseph’s Ballybunion were well beaten in Rathkeale against Ennistymon CBS of Clare by 6-17 to 2-7.
