Killorglin upset the party in Castleisland

DENNY PREMIER B

Castleisland B 0 Killorglin 2

THE home side were hoping to baptise their brand new pitch with a win but it failed to materialise at brand new Georgie O’Callaghan Park on Sunday with Killorglin winning the game with a fair degree of comfort.

Castleisland had a reasonable share of possession but everything was letting them down in the final third of the pitch where they had no cutting edge. Killorglin applied early pressure with Lee Carey and Daniel Whittleton proving to be hard to handle by the Castleisland defence.

Lee Carey put an early chance into the side netting but they went ahead in the 12th minute from a free kick. It was Dylan O’Sullivan who manufactured it with a great run from midfield and he was taken down just on the verge of the box.

The free kick was struck delightfully by Daniel Whittleton getting it around the wall and into the bottom corner of the net. Castleisland’s first chance came in the 14th minute with a rasper of a shot by Eamon McLoughlin was saved by Tony Lyons in the Killorglin goals.

Another chance came five minutes later, but Shane O’Loughlin fluffed his shot from close range. A blockbuster of a shot from Barry Lynch from distance was saved at the second attempt by Tony Lyons.

Killorglin had claims for a penalty just before half time when Lee Carey appeared to be taken down inside the box but referee Seamus O’Mahoney was in a good position to view it and play continued.

Castleisland had to make a change just before the break when Stephen McCarthy had to retire injured and he was replaced by Ethan O’Connor. The defining moment in this game came three minutes into the second half when Killorglin scored their second goal.

It came from a swift move from midfield and Dylan O’Sullivan took off like an express train leaving defenders in his wake and he finished to the net to put the Launesiders in the comfort zone.

The game got very scrappy after this with Killorglin easing off the pedal and Castleisland doing their best to try and pull back a goal. This opportunity came in the 80th minute after good build up play from midfield Shane O’Louglin had only the keeper to beat from six yards, but he hit his shot too tamely and the chance was gone.

They had another chance near the end but sub Josh Horan shot over the top. Killorglin were deserving winners at the end and should feature prominently in the title race if they can keep this type of form going.
