The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Scarcity of referees in county

- BY MIKE RICE

A SCARCITY of soccer referees in Kerry could lead to referees from neighbouring counties been drafted in to officiate at games in the KDL according to Acting Referee Observer Jim McCarthy.

He has told The Kerryman that with four teams from Kerry playing in the League of Ireland in 2019 he will find it difficult to have referees to cover all home games. He stated he may have to meet the executive of the Irish Soccer Referees Society with a view to bringing in referees from neighbouring leagues, or for the first time he may have to use three non-Society FAI registered referees to cover games.

He says that in an effort to increase numbers the Football Association of Ireland will hold a referees beginners course at Jackman Park, Limerick on Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14, from 9am to 5pm both days.

In the meantime any person male or female over the age of 16 with a genuine interest in refereeing can contact Jim at 087 2310863 / 068 31742.

Further information on the Limerick Referees beginners course will be disclosed in the coming weeks so watch this space.
