SP Sliabh Luachra claim Munster ‘B’ title with come from behind win

-

SCOIL Phobail Sliabh Luachra Rathmore left it late but managed to come from behind to claim the Munster Post-Primary ‘B’ title in Cloughduv last Saturday as they trailed by 1-6 to 0-7 heading into the last quarter with Mount St Michael Rosscarbery of Cork.

A tight first half had seen both sides go in level at 0-4 apiece but Patrick Hurley’s goal for Rosscarbery appeared to put Rathmore in some bother in the second period. All-Ireland Minor winner Dan Murphy and Cathal Ryan drew the two teams’ level on the scoreboard again before Anthony Darmody fired in the winning goal in injury time to see them succeed Inbhear Sceine Kenmare as winners of this event.

The win came despite a black card late on for David Dineen as they enter the All-Ireland semi-f inal of the Paddy Drummond Cup against the Leinster champions on Saturday March 23, one game away from making it to Croke Park for the decider.

SPSL RATHMORE: Ian O’Connor; Patrick Brosnan, Alan Dineen, Damien Cronin; Daniel Fleming, Owen Fitzgerald, Paul O’Leary; Ronan Collins, Sean O’Keeffe; Anthony Darmody (1-0), Dan Murphy (01), Cathal Ryan (0-4, 3f); James Darmody, David Dineen (0-3f), Denis O’Connor (0-1) Subs: Eoghan O’Rahilly for Fleming, Aaron Cronin for James Darmody, Daniel O’Sullivan for Dineen (b/c)

ELSEWHERE, Killorglin Community College missed out on the chance to make it a third Senior Post-Primary Schools title for the Kingdom this campaign last week as they lost to Scoil Phobail Kilfinane in the Munster School ‘E’ Final by 3-9 to 2-10 in Rathkeale.

MEANWHILE, the Frewen Cup (Munster U-16½ ‘A’) competition has reached the final stage with Intermediate School Killorglin to take on St Flannans of Ennis in the decider on Wednesday February 27. ISK defeated Bishopstown and Rochestown in the early stages of the competition before winning a high scoring all Kerry semi-final with Mercy Mounthawk Tralee by 1-19 to 3-7 last Friday in the John Mitchels Complex.

ST Flannans gained a degree of revenge for their loss to St Brendans Killarney in last year’s decider with a 4-6 to 1-13 win in Rathkeale to make a second successive decider. The winner will advance to the Paul McGirr All-Ireland U-16½ competition as Munster’s representatives.
