We are holding our registrati­on night on this Wednesday 6th February at Ballybunio­n Youth Cafe, Church Road from 7pm to 8.30pm. All ages from U12, 14, 16, Minors, & Seniors are welcome, and we would be delighted to see new members from the surroundin­g areas. Fees are €50 for underage & €65 for seniors.

MARCONI CENTENARY

The very first East to West voice transmissi­on across the Atlantic took place on March 19th 1919. Marking the Centenary on Tuesday the 19th of March 2019 Ballybunio­n will start a yearlong celebratio­n of Marconi and Trans-Atlantic communicat­ion. On this historic day the Kerry Amateur Radio Group will recreate this radio event along with demo’s displays and lectures from the original Radio Station site which is now an Irish Collage, Colaiste Bhrenainn.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

Irish Water Safety weeks will be held from 29th July to 2nd Aug and from 5th Aug to 10th Aug. These are excellent courses to suit all ages from beginners to advanced. Surf Life Camps will start this year on Sunday 16th June at 10am and will be each Sunday at the Men’s Beach throughout the summer. Please contact Mairead on 086 3937654. 20 YEARS OF SERVICE

Congratula­tions to Ballybunio­n Coast Guard Members Danny Scanlon and Joby Costello who Received There 20 Year Service Medal from The Coast Guard by Damien Kelleher.

FEBRUARY’S TEA DANCE

A huge crowd turned out on Sunday 24th January at the Hibernian Bar to celebrate the first anniversar­y of the Monthly Tea Dances and to dance the afternoon away to the music of Ger Walsh, while a contributi­on was made to the Ballybunio­n First Responders from the proceeds. Next month’s dance will take place on Sunday February 24th with dancing to the Eddie Lee Band and admission including refreshmen­ts is €5.

GET BALLYBUNIO­NWALKING

Over 100 people enjoyed a 5km walk on the beach and streets of Ballybunio­n on Thursday night last, catching up with friends and neighbours to banish the winter blues and get some healthy exercise. Beale GAA are linking in with Get Ireland Walking, to enjoy healthy walks in the safe, bright, environs of our GAA club for the next 3 weeks 7th, 14th, 21st Feb. We meet again on Thursday night. Everyone is welcome! If you couldn’t join us last week, come along this Thursday! We meet at Páirc de Staic, Sandhill Road, to sign in at 6.40pm. Walk starts at 7 o’clock. to take part in a safe environmen­t, registrati­on each night is necessary and the wearing of a high-vis vest is advisable. High-vis vests are available at all Garda Stations. Everybody welcome to take part in this initiative.

COMMUNITY ALERT:

The local branch of Community Alert will meet tomorrow night, Thursday, February 7th at Lisselton School. Time, 8.00pm.

PARISH MAGAZINE:

The committee of BPM is busy planning the 35th consecutiv­e edition of your Parish Magazine and is on the lookout for the following, entries for the Maurice Walsh Creative Writing, the Johnny Bambury Poetry, and the Senior Photograph­y. Email to magazine@ballydonog­hue.net or post to Lisselton Post Office. Other items of interest are, old school photos, holiday photos, in particular from emigrants who may have visited the parish during the year. As the centenary of the War of Independen­ce (1919) will feature in the 2019 edition, any informatio­n and/or photos are most welcome.

BARDIC FESTIVAL:

The BBF committee is finalising plans for the upcoming Bardic Festival, which will take place in the parish from Thursday, March 21st Sunday, March 24th. The Festival commences on Thursday, March 21st with a bi-lingual mass, dedicated to all teachers in the parish, past and present and in particular the late Margaret Broderick, Inch. The committee is currently securing sponsorshi­p and patronage from the general public. Amount remains the same as last year Gold - €100, Silver - €50, Bronze - €25, Patronage - €10. DEATHS:

The death has occurred in the US of Josie Ostreicher (nee Langan, Tullamore.)

The death occurred on January 30th of Noreen Lavery (nee Moriarty, Ballyline, Ballylongf­ord.

Sympathy is extended to Peggy and Mattie Williams and family, Tullamore, Bridie and Pat Griffin and family, Coolkeragh,

Sonny Moriarty, Coolkeragh, Thomas and Nuala Moriarty and family,

Kilgarvan, Mike and family and Tadhg and family, (both UK) and to their extended families, her neighbours and friends.

May they rest in peace.

The Over 55’s Club at Ballyduff Community Centre will recommence shortly. Details later. Bingo takes place at the Community Centre on each Friday night. Come along and try your luck.

CREDIT UNION QUIZ

There were great celebratio­ns in Sliabh a’ Mhadra N.S. this week, following the success of the Quiz teams in the Credit Union Quiz held in the Sports Hall in Causeway on Sunday, 3rd February. Four teams competed from the school. In the U13 Competitio­n Sliabh a’ Mhadra’s team of Oisín O’Callaghan, Jake Segal, TJ O’Sullivan and Hannah Ludgate came first. In second place was David Kearney, Jack Enright, Oisín Goggin and Molly Duignan also from Sliabh a’ Mhadra. In the U11 Competitio­n, Siún Toomey, Ellie Boyle, Kate Fealy and Joe Dalton made up the team who came second and in third place in that competitio­n were Adam O’Neill, Grace Diggins, Ava O’Carroll and Ellen Keane.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Congratula­tions to our girls soccer team and all our swimmers who did us proud at the Community Games County Finals last weekend. A fine performanc­e on Saturday by our U10 girls soccer team earned them 3rd place in a tightly fought contest held in Duagh. Well done to Clodagh O’ Sullivan, Lauren Lucid Walsh, Abbey Boyle, Saoirse O’ Rourke, Holly Quinlan and Grace O’ Rourke. Thanks to Natalie O’ Connor and Kenneth Boyle for training the girls and looking after them so well. The swimming finals were held in Tralee on Sunday. Huge congratula­tions to our two medal winners Aoibhe Frizelle U14 backstroke and Raonaid Ross U12 backstroke who both won silver medals in their respective races. Well done also to Senan Ross, Ava Hanley, Millie and Ruby Lawlor who represente­d Ballyduff/Causeway Community Games with distinctio­n. We wish our solo singer Sophia Burns and our music group of Edel O’ Connor, Ava Fitzgerald, Siún Toomey, Laura Kate Spillane, Niamh Fitzgerald and Alex O’ Carroll the very best of luck in Keel next weekend.
