Bad weather no match for a stormin’ hoedown
IT may not have been the best of nights in terms of weather, but that did not stop some 300 people calling to a marquee in Upper William Street, wearing stetsons and stilletos in aid of one of the town’s mainstays, the local Tidy Towns group.
A barn dance and a half lit up a wintry night, with the Michael Collins Showband playing a blinder on an evening that also saw such festivities as a barbecue and a disco.
While the funds have not yet been totted up, it would seem the Tidy Towns group will be helped a long way in buying a van, which the group itself has told The Kerryman will prove a major boost in terms of transporting equipment – ominous news for any Tidy Towns groups hoping to follow in the footsteps of Listowel, last year’s overall national Tidy Towns winner.
The event on Friday evening was organised by the Listowel Business and Community Alliance group, and Listowel Tidy Towns Chairperson Julie Gleeson was very thankful for the effort that was put in on her group’s behalf.
“We’re very thankful to the Listowel Business and Community Alliance for thinking of us, and it was a lovely gesture,” she told The Kerryman. “It was a great night, very enjoyable, and there was a grand turnout as well – especially given the weather that was there!”
