Fybough getting to grips with handball

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

IT may have been visiting teacher and handball champion Aisling O’Keeffe who first set Fybough NS on its road to glory, but since her departure, Principal Catherine Ní Mhurchú and the rest of the staff and pupils have embraced the sport and excelled in it.

So much so that two of their senior students, Allyn O’Shea and Sarah O’Connor, are now set to compete in the under-11 section of the Cumann na mBunscoil Munster Championship this coming Saturday, February 16.

“We could have stopped when Ms O’Keeffe left, but we saw the interest and the potential and the ability that was there, and we knew that we had to keep this going,” said Catherine.

“We have Cathal O’Sullivan, who would have medals at county level and All Irelands from his youth, and he helps with the training, which is brilliant.”

Catherine went on to say that since handball started in the school, the standard of players in the school is improving year after year as more and more pupils progress to the Munster Championship.

Speaking about Allyn and Sarah’s run to Munster this year, Catherine said that the school is “so proud” and applauded their willingness to embrace such a competitive sport and succeeding against tough opposition.
