Farranfore steps out for Irish Heart Foundation
THE walking shoes are well and truly on in Farranfore with the launch of a new Irish Heart Foundation walkway.
The walk launch takes place today ( Wednesday) and will incorporate the two Farranfore ‘Slí na Sláinte’ walking routes along the 4.6km old Tralee road (from Farranfore Railway Park to Shanahan’s Garden Centre); and the 2.4km footpath from Sherwood’s Bar to Kerry Airport.
Local schoolchildren will take part, and the event is about getting people active, promoting the new walkways, and raising funds for the Irish Heart Foundation.
A few years ago, local mechanic Tommy Murphy raised €7,000 as part of a head-shaving event.
He donated €6,000 to the Irish Heart Foundation and €1,000 to buy a defibrillator for the village.
“It’s a healthy walk that we hope will be well-used. We’re having the launch early as we want to encourage the school children to come. The school Principal in Knockaderry National School, Aine Day, arranges a walk for the children on the first Wednesday of every month, so we decided to twin the two,” said Chairperson of Farranfore Development Association Richard Sherwood.
