- By SIMON BROUDER

WITH the summer cycling season approaching fast one of the first big events on Kerry’s biking calendar takes place this weekend.

The fifth annual Caherdaniel fundraising Valentine bicycle ride takes place on Saturday February 16.

The cycle will start from the cross in Caherdaniel at 1pm with the cyclists making their way to Sneem and back.

The cycle is held in memory of much missed Caherdaniel woman Ita Corridan who passed away in 2014. It is held to raise much-needed funds for the Marymount Hospice in Cork where Ita was cared for in her final days.

To date, the annual event – which usually attracts around 200 participants who come from all over the country to take part – has raised an impressive €47,000 for the hospice and other charities and worthy local causes. Cyclists can register and donate on the day. Refreshments will be provided in Sneem in D O Shea’s bar at the midway point of the event and after the cycle there will be further refreshments at the local parish hall in Caherdaniel.

Later on – once the cyclists have had a chance to recover from the day’s exertions – there will be live music and entertainment in the Blind Piper bar.

The cycle has already established itself as a fixture for cyclist enthusiasts in South Kerry and further afield.

As the first major Kerry cycle of the year, it has consistently attracted a large crowd, with many using the event as the start of their preparations for the cycling season’s main event, the Ring of Kerry Cycle in July.
