ARDFERT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Cumann Staire Ard Fhearta The second last lecture in the current Winter Series of lectures at Ardfert Retreat Centre was entitled ‘The Impact of the Great Famine on Ardfert’ and was delivered by Tommy O Connor. Once again there was a full house in attendance and Tommy drew from a lot of resources for the lecture. He included lots of local newspaper reports from the 1880’s which included Ardfert in their reporting, including views from the landed gentry and also from local priests etc. who tried to help the poor and starving in the locality. He also included some reports from the Irish Folklore Commission which referred to the famine and various families affected in Barrow, Tubrid and Ardfert Village. Statistics were also shown highlighting the detrimental effects the famine had on population in Kerry villages and the decline in family numbers and houses. The famine also led to immediate emigration with the numbers trying to flee the effects of poverty and illness leading to even more death and despair.

Our final lecture in this series is on Thursday March 7th and is entitled ‘Songs and Poems of Ardfert’ and will be delivered by Anne Kearney. Once again the venue is Ardfert Retreat Centre. All welcome.
