WINDOW ON THE PAST

In 1927 the Kerryman reported a case in the Listowel District Court where Barron & Co. Dublin tea merchants were suing Mrs. Margaret McCarthy of Chapel Street, Tarbert for 5 pounds 10 shillings. She was the widow of Lieut. Denis McCarthy a retired naval pensioner. Mrs. McCarthy had carried on business as a publican, grocer and lodging house keeper since the 1900’s. On her son Cecil’s marriage she gave him over the business and premises with the exception of a bedroom and parlour which she kept for herself. She and her son’s wife did not get on very well and she argued that she had no recourse to the business for the past four years. A decree for costs was given against her son. The late Paddy Carmody, a retired RIC pensioner subsequently purchased the premises with the arrangement that Mrs. McCarthy would enjoy the same house living arrangements up until her death. Paddy and his wife Ellen (Stack from Duagh) reared five boys and four girls. When Paddy died in 1957 the business was carried on by his son Michael and his wife Nuala. Since Michael’s death in 2016 business at this 7 day licensed premises has been carried on very capably and efficiently by Nuala Carmody and family. on the weekend of March 2-3. The forty strong group consisting of musicians, singers, dancers and supporters will be staying at the Devon Inn Hotel and are looking forward to meeting with local musicians, singers, dancers and storytellers.
