Abbeyside (Waterford) 2-9 Beaufort 0-10

ABBEYSIDE of Waterford prevailed in a tight affair against Beaufort of Kerry in Mallow on Sunday. Both sides where evenly matched in the opening half with Abbeyside enjoying the early exchanges Maria Delahunty and Eimear Fennell helping the Waterford side into an early three-point lead. Hannah O’Donoghue getting Beaufort off the mark in the 15th minute.

Beaufort where sluggish to begin with finding it hard to break down a defensive Abbeyside team but gradually came into the game Further points from Sarah Houlihan and Cliona Coffey had the sides level by the nineteenth minute. Sarah Houlihan second point of the afternoon gave Beaufort the lead for the first and only time in the match as Abbeyside with the aid of a slight breeze in the first half would close out the half scoring three unanswered points. Maria Delahunty (2) and Eimear Fennell to go in at the break 0-6 to 0-4.

Beaufort where well within this game going into the start of the second half but unfortunately Abbeyside hit a purple patch. Two goals inside the first six minutes from Eimear Fennell and from the penalty spot from Maria Delahunty opened an eight-point lead. The first half suggested little in the way of goals so two goals in quick succession where to play a vital part in what turn out to be an extremely tight contest. Beaufort for their part would respond from a free from Captain Sarah Houlihan.

Eimear Fennell had increased Abbeyside’s lead to nine points by the eighteen-minute making Beauforts task even more difficult but to their credit they where not prepared to throw in the towel. Led by their captain Sarah Houlihan who scored three points two from frees and one from play. The deficit was now down to six. It could have been reduced further in between this only for Aimee Jordan to save in the Abbeyside goal. With Caoimhe McGrath receiving a yellow card momentum was very much with Beaufort as they began to throw everything at Abbeyside with the hope of getting the goal they so desperately required as time was not on their side.

Sinead O’Connell and Fiadhna Tangney with points that on another day would have found the back of the net proved too little too late as Abbeyside ran out five-point winners. Credit to Beaufort they gave it everything out on the pitch and that is all you can ask of any side.
