Putting the focus on mental health
FIFTY men from Men’s Sheds in Tralee, Listowel, Dingle, Ballyduff, Ballybunion and Ballyheigue heard from a wide range of expert speakers on the subject of mental health and well being in a special half-day seminar in Listowel last week marking Kerry Health and Well Being Festival 2019.
Organised by North, East and West Kerry Development with the Kerry Men’s Shed Association, it took place in the Listowel Community Centre on Wednesday, where Ted Coates of the Irish Men’s Shed Association spoke at the outset of the importance of the movement and how the sheds have transformed the mental health of so many men.
Other speakers featured nutritionist Elaine McGuire - of McGuire’s Pharmacy in Listowel; Yoga and mindfulness instructor Maeve Ferris, who led a half-hour ‘chair yoga’ class much to the enjoyment of all the men; Listowel Community Centre manager Tony Duggan, speaking on the importance of physical exercise in the ageing process.
Lisa O’Brien of Pieta House spoke about the level of support that exists now for people experiencing difficulties and/or crises, among many other illuminating aspects of the half-day seminar.
The men were also brought on a tour of the facilities in the centre, including sports hall, gym, weights room, spinning room, sauna and steam room.
And they had an Olympian as guest of honour - 50km medallist Rob Heffernan. Rob entertained the group with stories of his life and career. While acknowledging the high points he was brutally honest about his setbacks and the disappointments that he has had to overcome on his journey, staying on for a good while after the event to chat with all.
“As well as the obvious good work going on in all the sheds, their very existence provides an opportunity for men to meet, talk and make friends as well as participate in shed activities, outings and meetings. Today is just about recognising and promoting the value of these things and acknowledging their positive impact on men’s health,” David Fitzgibbon of the NEWKD said.
