Young showjumpers leap to success for charity
MAIRÉAD O’Leary said it was the great work being done by Recovery Haven that led to her choosing them as the charity to receive the proceeds from her family fun day on December 28 last year.
The event was held at the
Streamside Stable just outside Moyvane on a day that would meet every definition of the term ‘community event’.
Kids from all over North Kerry descended on the small family run equestrian centre for a day of fun show jumping with a Christmas twist.
Speaking to The Kerryman after presenting the cheque, Mairéad was effusive in her praise of the work done by the cancer support charity.
“It’s a charity that we’ve always heard a lot about. They are totally dependent on people raising money for them and everyone always tries to do their bit for them and they are just a very, very good cause,” she said.
“For people who either have cancer or are recovering from cancer, they are a great support. For families and children, they offer bereavement groups, they do counselling, They just do an awful lot for people,” she continued.
As for the amount of money raised - €1,900 - Mairead said she couldn’t believe that so much was collected.
“I couldn’t believe it. It was just a fun day. Tracey Quinn is the woman who runs Streamside Stables and I remember just asking her whether she’d be interested in doing a fundraiser for Recovery Haven and she just said ‘no bother’. Without Tracey, it simply wouldn’t have been done,” said Mairéad.
Tracey aside, Mairead said that there were many others who deserve credit for helping to make the event such a success.
These include: Tom Dillon, Noreen Taylor, Mary Ambrose and Tracey’s assistant at Streamside Stables, Rachel Dean to name a few.
