A NEW social media campaign has been launched in the Skellig region to bring hope and happiness at this current time, and also to help an essential local charity.

#skelligcoast2kms is asking all of the communities, from Kells to Castlecove – especially young people – to get outdoors and share the wonder of the Skellig region.

“We are encouraging everyone to pick up that phone or camera and start noticing and uploading images or videos to their own social media channels using #skelligcoast2kms,” explained Norma O’Shea of Skellig Six18 Distillery.

She said that the Skellig Region has plenty to offer within the 2km restriction.

“Being able to notice and see the ‘Extra-ordinary in the Ordinary’ and to be able share that with so many people who aren’t as lucky right now is such a great gift.

“Spring lambs, birds, flowers, landscapes, hands baking, tractors working in fields, old walls. Our diaspora will love to see these images and videos too at this time,” added Norma.

Skellig Six 18 will also make a donation to Cúnamh Iveragh Respite Fund for every image or video posted using #skelligcoast2kms, with the aim of reaching a target of €1,000 and also raising awareness of the great need for the Cúnamh Iveragh Respite Fund.

Skellig Six18 will be sharing images and videos on their Instagram and Facebook Stories and on Twitter, so go to the Skellig Six 18 social media pages for more information and to post photos. To date, there have been a number of photos [ see right] uploaded to the campaign that capture the beauty of the Skellig region, and as the campaign gets underway, it is hoped more will come in.

The funds raised will go towards helping Cunamh Iveragh realise its dream of a respite house in the region. The project is underway, but the cancellation of the Ring of Kerry has left the charity without this vital funding. The respite house will be developed at the former Presentation Covent in Cahersiveen and will serve the entire Skellig region. A day-care centre is already in place, and the respite centre is the next step in the local charity’s plans.

They are thrilled with the new campaign and are urging the public to capture their local region and share it on social media for the world to see and enjoy in this current pandemic.
