Think the cabin fever is bad? Just consider the scenes on the COVID-19 frontline

SIR,

So you think that you are having it tough? The four walls closing in and the few that you can speak to are getting on your mind. The children are running riot at home with the schools closed and the brand new wallpaper that was only put up after Christmas is utterly destroyed. You would if you could head for the nearest pub to regain your sanity but you cannot, they are all closed. You are after going to the bottle bank for the fourth time since this damn thing arrived. Tough is it not?

In your mind’s eye visit one of the thousands of Intensive Care Units Worldwide. Picture the hundreds of people of all ages struggling to stay alive. Picture the thousands of healthcare workers struggling to keep them alive. Listen to the thousands of people who are dying and are calling out for their loved ones to be near. Picture the thousands of healthcare workers crying as they watch them depart and are immediately removed for another to take their place.

Now go back to the four walls that troubled you. Join the children in writing on the wallpaper. Put more spring in your step when you go for your walk. Try something different for dinner this evening. Buy a better bottle of wine and see if you can enjoy it more than usual. Be kinder to your loved ones, hug them more and kiss them often. Forgive them all of their frailties and hope that they can forgive yours.

Go to bed at night with their names on your lips and pray that tomorrow will be the start of a better day,

Sincerely,

Michael O Meara,

Faha
