Cronin reveals his INEC title bout plan

- BY DAMIAN STACK

PROFESSIONAL boxer Kevin Cronin from Milltown has revealed in an interview with The Kerryman that he was in line for a bout in the INEC in Killarney in 2021. Those plans, however, have been put on the back-burner as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

“We were due to have four fights this year and if I was successful in the four fights they [his promoters] were going booking the INEC for next summer,” he said.

“That was one we were trying to keep on the down-low, but you can be sure we’re not getting four fights this year. That’s what was going to be happening. I would have been in line for a light heavyweight [BUI] Celtic title, which then if I win that I’d be in line for the Irish title.

“So that’s the way it was kind of going and it still is going that way. It is delayed, but it might even suit because we’re trying to pick one or two things from every boxer, but it’s working well as of now. I’m out my back garden training with a bit of a bag and a rope going across to work on my head movement, so that’s really all I’m at now. I suppose everyone is in the same boat.”

Cronin’s ambitions remain firmly on the top, with the Kingdom Warrior targeting a European title within the next five years.

“By the time I’m twenty-eight I’m going to be holding a European title at a minimum. We still have that plan, the four fights, but spread out now because of the COVID-19. Four successful fights then the INEC in Killarney for the Celtic title, that will probably be the way it’s looking right now. If he keeps winning (it’ll) probably be against Julio Cesar Carvalho, he’s from Belfast. He’s very good. He beat a seven-time Irish champion in his last fight, Seán McGlinchy, so that’s the way it’s kind of leading as long as we keep winning.”
