Keel community takes a trip down memory lane

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

WHERE there is a will, there is a way, and pupils at Fybough National School have proven that you can do anything you put your mind to, having finished their Junior Entrepreneur Project despite the current school shut-down.

Some months ago, the school community began working on a wonderful idea of collating memories of their local area for a booklet ‘Down Memory Lane’, and this booklet is now on sale in local shops or from the school.

Though the COVID-19 lock-down halted plans to launch the book and has affected plans for their sale of the book, the local pupils are still hoping that everyone will support their endeavour and purchase the publication.

It is the ideal gift for those currently indoors, with a host of interviews from members of the local community in Keel and Castlemaine, including former Kerry footballer Pat Spillane, who has ties to the area and who was to launch the book prior to the pandemic.

The Junior Entrepreneur Programme

(JEP) encouraged the children to come up with a number of mini business ideas which they pitched to a panel of dragons – including teacher Eileen Lovett, Principal Catherine Ní Mhuircheartaigh and local business woman Liz’O Connor, proprietor of the Anvil Bar. Liz also spoke to the children about the operations of a business, and the pupils learned a great deal from her. The winning concept was a book which would offer accounts/ stories from people living in the locality. As the students pointed out in their sales pitch: ‘Everyone has a story and we would like to record them so that they can be passed on to future generations.

“You don’t have to be famous to have an extraordinary life.”

The children from third to sixth class worked as a team to produce ‘Down Memory Lane’ and were involved in all aspects including design, marketing, interviewing and collating the book. It is now on sale at Benson’s Quickpick, or email the school at fyboughns1964@gmail.com, and profits will be used for a well-deserved treat for the hard-working pupils.
