Taking school days fully into the digital age

- By LIAM HASSETT, DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

AS learning goes you may have heard the phrase ‘every day is a school day’, but in these times everyday is a digital learning day. As teachers and staff of St Michael’s College, we have received the best professional development and in-service in modern teaching and learning. How? Well, through collaboration and seeking best practice we have adapted to the emerging needs of our students.

But the big question is, are all our students learning?

The answer is YES!

Some students are delighted with the time and space to work on their digital devices and complete their assignments when it suits them. Some students are learning how to use the technology, and some students are learning how to cope with the stress and anxiety caused by COVID-19. So, as always is the case in learning, we have and will always have different types of learners.

The challenge for us as educators is how to differentiate teaching and learning in the digital space. Our teachers are spending a lot of time and being very creative in ensuring all our students can work as independent learners. So, let’s take a moment and reflect on the huge learning that is taking place in every ‘Home School’ throughout the country.

Our students are now more challenged but change brings growth; our students are more isolated but yet more connected through technology; we are all living in complicated situations but find peace in the simple things in life.

“Every day is a school day”.
