What was your childhood ambition? To be a jockey Growing up, who was your sporting hero? In racing it was Norman Williamson, and in soccer Eric Cantona Do you have a mentor? I’ve had plenty of mentors along the way and still have plenty supporting me What or where is your happy place? On the back of a horse What sparked your love of racing? Pony racing What horse put you on the map? It is a dead heat between Spring the Que and Preists Leap. I won the 2007 Pierse Hurdle at Leopardsto­wn on Spring the Que, and Preists Leap won back to back Thyestes Chases at Gowran Park in 2008 and 2009 Who is your favourite horse? Westerner Point. He is just a great horse to jump and I’ve won 10 races on him for a great trainer Eoghan O’Grady who does a brilliant job with him What was it like to ride in your first race? It was really exciting, the start of a dream How long does it take to learn race-riding tactics? I am always learning Describe the feeling of riding your first winner? It was on ‘I Will Now’ for trainer Gerry Cully at Downpatric­k Racecourse on August 7, 2005. It was unbelievab­le, hard to put into words What is your most memorable racing moment? When Sprinter Sacre came Punchestow­n for the 2013 Festival. He ran in the Champion Chase on the opening day of the Festival and I was lucky enough to ride in the same race on Days Hotel. The atmosphere was great What is your favourite racecourse in Ireland? Killarney If you weren’t a jockey what would you be? Not quite sure but a horse would have to be involved If you could ride one horse, what would it be? Istabraq How do you cope with pressure? I try to treat every race the same and not let it get to me What mental preparatio­n do you do for the big days? I have the same prep for every race How do you stay motivated? It’s easy when you love what you do How do you deal with dips in form? Don’t look back, keep pushing forward Outside of racing, what is your favourite sporting moment? Watching Kerry win All-Irelands Can you give us a Netflix/film recommenda­tion? I’m never one to much watch TV but during these times Power on Netflix is not too bad What is your guilty pleasure?
