The work saw numerous flower beds dug up and replanted , grass cut at the entrance to the Village and the area around the turn to Littor Strand prepared for flowers while making it more attractive and safer.

A special thank you to Donie O Keeffe for allowing the use of his poly tunnel for the cultivation of the flowers.

Work will continue on a weekly basis and the Development wish to thank the sub committees and all volunteers who take on the work and ensure it is carried out as planned.

COVID -19

With the easing on Covid 19 restrictions the community were delighted to see the church open again last Wednesday and many people visited over the weekend observing all the distancing regulations.

Meanwhile people are asked to continue to be cautious and keep to the advice given by the government and Health service.

Thankfully many people have been able to go back to work again while some businesses were able tp open their doors afain and get back to some type of reality.

Everyone knows that it will take a long time for the country to get back to normal again but people must be patient as every little step gets us closer to the ultimate aim.

The Asdee Development Association continue to be available to ensure that the needs of our community especially our senior citizens and those most at risk are being looked after.

We are working closely with the local Gardai and we would like to thank Seargent Mike McCarthy and Garda Damien Ryan and all the Gardai for their help and support at these testing times for everyone.

A number of people are looking after the various townlands in the parish on a rota basis.

Anyone that needs help of any kind can contact any member of the Development Association or can ring any of the following / John Kennedy 087 2428569 / Joe Dee 087 9322648 / Martin Stack 087 2762635 / Sinead Doyle 087 2247431 at any time.

It is important that we continue to adhere to the guidelines which have been laid down for us by the Government so that we can all come through this together.

DEATH OF NOEL THE CRUSHER BOYLE

This side of the parish was greatly saddened at the news of the death of Noel Boyle of Well Road Ballylongford.

Affectionately known to everyone as “The Crusher” Noel was one of the great characters of the area and was known far and wide.

He spent most of his working life at Kennelly’s Garage in the village and built up a great relationship with all the customers.

He hd a huge interest in Gaelic Football and where it was his local club, Shannon Rangers or Kerry

The garage as a popular congregation point on Monday mornings where the postmortum of the previous days match was conducted. He loved a bit of banter laughter and hop ball and never shy of expressing his opinion.

He was actively involved in everything that was happening in the area and was held in the highest regarded by everyone who knew him.

His Requiem Mass was celebrated at Ballylongford Church on Friday and internment took place afterwards to Lislaughtin Cemetery.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his brother Seamus, sister Maureen, Geraldine, Ursula, Susan and Beau, and all other family members and relatives.

MEMORY LANE, 1989-1993:

Asdee emerge as a force in North Kerry, 1989 will not be remembered for having any trophies on the display cabinet but still all teams performed splendidly in all competitions. The novice A county championship was well contested where we defeated Ballymac in the opening round but lost to Kilgarvin at the semi-final stage. In the Mart Cup final Ballydonoghue defeated us after a replay with the game taking place in Ballybunion on January 6th, 1990. The year 1990 will always stand out as the year Asdee won their first trophy at senior level in North Kerry, in capturing the Mart Cup. This competition was organised for losers in the first round of the

North Kerry senior championship and very often proved to be a very hard competition to win. Locally this Year, it was extra special as it brought together great rivals and fellow parishioners Asdee and Ballylongford. After taking, care of Brosna which took extra time to decide in a marvelous game, the whole of North Kerry was eagerly awaiting the clash of Asdee and Bally and they weren’t disappointed with the match. A record crowd for this competition, a well contested game and a great sporting occasion with football the complete winner. The final score was Asdee 1 13, Bally 2-6. The team was: Tom Gorman, Tom Long, Tom Kennedy, Sean O’Keeffe, Gerdie O,Carroll, Mike O’Connor, Eric O’Neill, Sean Doran, Barry Healy, J.P. McElligOtt, paddy Dee, Donie O’Keeffe (Capt.), Kevin O’Callaghan, John Kennedy, John Joe o,carroll. Subs., Micheal O’Connor, Tom O’Sullivan, Fergus O’Connor, Tom Stack, Neil O’Connor, Mike Moloney, Kevin Healy and Joe Dee. In a senior football tournament run by Foynes GAA club in Shanagolden, Asdee were victorious over Athea 1 13 to 1 6 in the final after defeating the locals at the semi-final stage.

Another historic event arrived on Thursday, April 12th in Finuge when the club fielded a junior team in the North Kerry league against the home side and they marked the occasion with a famous victory, 1-2 to 0-4. The team was: Joe Dee, Neil O’Connor, Tim O’Connor, Johnny O’Sullivan, Eamon Doran, Jimmy O’Carroll, James Vallely, Sean Doran, Peter Stack, Tom Long, Patsy Sheehan (Capt.), John Deenihan, Sean Deenihan, Sean Whyte, Mike O’Donoghue. it is worth recalling that Michael Walsh, who was the only selector at the game, got assistance from Tom O’Sullivan and Jack Hennessy. They continued to impress in other competitions and defeated Duagh to reach the semi-final of the Murphy Cup against Ballydonoghue in Ballylongford.

Yes, this was the same competition that the club won as a junior side in 1986 and how ironic it would be if our B team, in their inaugural year could once again lift the Murphy Cup.
