St Patrick’s Night concert for KerryCork cancer bus
GNEEVEGUILLA GAA Club members are the driving force behind a fundraising concert on St Patrick’s night which will benefit the Kerry-Cork Cancer Support Group Bus.
The local Community Centre will resound to a fantastic selection of music, song and dance courtesy of a large team of local performers.
Organisers said: “We are raising money for this very worthy cause, namely the Cancer Link Bus. There is an abundance of musical talent in Sliabh Luachra. Some will be performing at different venues around the world on St Patrick’s Night, yet there is enough talent left behind to guarantee a great night’s entertainment in Gneeveguilla!
“During the interlude, Caoine Luimní will be played as a tribute to all those who succumbed to the disease. We will especially remember Louise O’Connor Daly (aged 40) and Pat Joe O’Sullivan, both natives of our own community who passed away recently.”
Gneeveguilla GAA Club has been to the fore in displaying an awareness of how important the social aspect of membership of a club is – in their caring, empathizing and in reaching out to people of all ages in their every need. The annual Carnival and the election of a Lord Mayor in the month of August is such fun that even the small farmer with bales left behind in boggy meadows enjoys the occasion! In times of grief, however, they are at their best.
In 2023, there were an estimated 9,700 deaths from cancer in the country, 38% of all deaths registered. It is the biggest killer in Ireland. There are approximately thirty nine types of cancer and very few families have escaped the disease.
Johnny Walsh will take on MC duties on the night, accompanied by All Ireland Champion Story Teller Sonny Egan.
Performers include Laura McNamee, Eileen, Eleanor and Noreen Cronin, Sheila Fitzgerald, Maura Kelly, Joan Collins, Arthur and Olivia Tarrant, Jerry Sugrue, Christy Cronin with Pat Sullivan and Tom McKenna, Ambrose Donnelly, Ballydesmond Scór Group and teams of Irish Dancers.
There is no entrance fee but during the Interlude, a voluntary collection will be taken up in the Bar upstairs and in the Concert venue downstairs.
