Kells Bay Gardens wins prestigious Royal Horticulture Society medal

-

BILLY Alexander of Kells Bay House and Gardens has secured another hugely prestigious accolade in receiving the Royal Horticultural Society’s Lawrence Medal, the highest honour a garden exhibitor can obtain.

The multiple Chelsea Show gold medallist received the prize for ‘The Ferns of Kells Bay Gardens’, winner of a gold medal and best in show at Chelsea in 2023.

The Lawrence Medal goes to the best exhibit shown to the RHS during the year.

Although twice a Chelsea gold medallist, this is his first time winning the Lawrence prize.

Mr Alexander received the prize from RHS President Keith Weed at Lindley Hall, and he has also been appointed as a member of the RHS judges’ panel. “I am honoured to receive this award, which is evidence of high standards of excellence in Irish Horticulture, and is also a recognition of the fantastic ferns which grow so happily at Kells Bay,” said Mr Alexander, who purchased Kells Bay House and Gardens in 2006 and has since restored and developed the location.

“I am delighted that so many people saw the exhibit and recognised how the simplicity, beauty and elegance of the ferns can enhance any garden.

“We won’t be competing at RHS Chelsea 2024, but visitors are always welcome to visit them in Kerry where they are happiest. I am pleased to report that the mild winter has ensured that the Ferns of Kells Bay Gardens in situ are in prime condition and we are fully open to visitors. This award is also a recognition of the great team we have at Kells Bay House and Gardens and our commitment to achieving the highest standards.”

The display featured an array of native Irish ferns as well as Southern Hemisphere tropical and sub-tropical plants. The gardens themselves, located between Cahersiveen and Glenbeigh, are open to the public and also include walking trails and Ireland’s longest rope bridge.
