The Kerryman (North Kerry)

St Senans the only team with full points in fourth division

Division 4 & 5 - Round 2

-

ST Senans is the only team that has the maximum four points in Division Four after the first two rounds, after they had just one point to spare against Castlegregory in Mountcoal on Sunday. Waterville and Brosna are next best in the division but both dropped a point after being held to draws by St Michaels-Foilmore and Brosna respectively.

St. Senans 2-11 Castlegregory 1-13

ST. Senans made a terrific start at home, kicking 2-4 in the first quarter, with the goals coming from Seán McGrath and Thomas Dillon. Maurice O’Connell, who had an enthralling duel with Darragh Behan throughout, finally opened Castlegregory’s account, with Cian O’Grady (2) and Conor O’Leary also on target. However, the West Kerry men were still facing a formidable task at half time, trailing as they were by 2-7 to 0-5. Behan, Paudie Quille, Seán McGrath, and Cillian Trant were the pick of St. Senans at that stage.

Castlegregory looked much sharper on the resumption and quickly began to eat into the deficit. Thomas O’Donnell, Cian O’Grady and Greg Fitzgerald were all on the mark. Last year’s Kerry minor Paudie Fitzgerald and Maurice O’Connell split the posts. With ten minutes left Maurice O’Connell got in for a very well-crafted goal to put Castlegregory in front.

Castlegregory slotted a free, Maurice O’Connell nudged the visitors back in front, but St. Senans held their nerve to come back and finally kick a winning point to finish a fantastic game.

Waterville 1-5 St Michael’s-Foilmore 0-8

SHARPSHOOTERS Barry O’Dwyer for Waterville and Jack Clifford for St. Michaels/Foilmore exchanged early frees to get both sides off the mark. Both sides left scoring chances behind them, most notably Kieran O’Donnell hitting the post for the visitors, before Jack Clifford pointed a mark. Barry O’Dwyer pointed from play to leave the half-time score at just 0-2 apiece.

On the resumption Donagh Sugrue and Jack Clifford (f) doubled St. Michaels/ Foilmore’s advantage. Clifford slotted another free before Waterville got their first score of the half through Jack Curran. Jack Clifford responded with another two frees to make it 0-7 to 0-3. However, Waterville, who had been guilty of missing some good chances, albeit with a tricky wind, got a goal through Dylan Huggard and Barry O’Dwyer fed Jack Curran for an equaliser. Barry O’Dwyer put them in front through a free but Jack Clifford replied in kind to ensure a share of the spoils at 1-5 to 0-8.

Beale 1-8 Brosna 0-11

HONOURS even after an absolutely cracking game in Beale. There was very little between the teams in a gripping first half, but a superb goal by a lively Conor Twomey gave Beale a 1-4 to 0-5 half-time lead.

However, with Conor Lane in sparkling form, Brosna gradually asserted themselves in the second half and led by two points in the dying minutes. It was Beale’s turn to dig deep and a late equaliser coolly converted by Barry O’Neill was enough to give them a deserved share of the spoils.

Ballyduff 2-9 Dromid Pearses 1-13

BALLYDUFF and Dromoda na Piarsaigh played out a superb game, helped by an immaculate Ballyduff pitch that allowed both teams to play at pace. Dromid Pearses led by 1-5 to 0-4, Thomas Curran (who finished with 1-2) scoring the goal. Best for the visitors were Niall Ó Sé, Pádraig Walsh, Jack O’Sullivan in midfield, Thomas Curran, Niall O’Connor, Donagh ‘Shine’ O’Sullivan, and sharpshooter Chris Farley.

Ballyduff gave as good as they got, especially the excellent Mikey Boyle, who posed a huge threat all through. He kicked some great scores, including a goal, with Kevin Goulding scoring the other. Ballyduff led briefly heading into the fourth quarter, but a strong finish from Dromid, especially the influential free-taker Chris Farley, resulted in a narrow but precious away victory.

DIVISION 4 Jimmy Darcy

Lios Póil 1-14 Cromane 3-9

CROMANE had 1-1 on the board before Cian Ó Cinneide (1-2), Gearóid Ó Nuanáin, and Seamus Mac Gearailt put Lios Póil in front. Cromane responded with 1-2 of their own before Cian Ó Cinneide trimmed the gap to one point. A further 1-2 for Cromane meant that Lios Póil trailed by 3-5 to 1-6 at the break despite Marc Ó Máinnín’s last minute score.

Ó Mainnín added another three points in the third quarter but Cromane were able to respond every time. Two late Cormac Ó Cinnéide points and another by Ó Máinnín took it to the wire but Cromane held on for the narrowest of victories.
