GAA LOTTO DRAW

The latest Scartaglen GAA Lotto Draw took place in Flemings Bar on Sunday evening April 7. The jackpot of €5,800 was not won. Numbers drawn were: 4, 11, 15, 16. Consolatio­n prizewinne­rs in the Lucky Dip were as follows: €40 - Craig Brosnan, Scartaglen; €30 each to Con Keane, Scartaglen and Anne Drummy, Tralee; €20 each to Ava and Kyle Kerins, Scartaglen; Adam Tangney, Scartaglen and Jerry O Connor, Scartaglen. The next draw will take place on April 28th in Hughes Bar, Cordal when the jackpot will be €6,000.

CONFIRMATI­ON

Congratula­tions to the girls and boys from the locality who received The Sacrament of Confirmati­on in Castleisla­nd Parish Church on Wednesday of last week. Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne presided at the Confirmati­on Ceremony where 75 young people in all were confirmed.

FIRST COMMUNION

First Communion Day in Scartaglen will be on Saturday April 27th with mass being celebrated at 2pm in Our Lady of Lourdes Church.

PETERS PENCE

The annual diocesan collection in aid of Peters Pence (Propagatio­n of the Faith) will be taken up at massees in the parish this weekend.

RALLY OF THE LAKES

This years Rally of the Lakes will take place on Saturday and Sunday May 4th/5th. On Sunday May 5th the Rally can be seen at Knockrour, Knockreagh, Ballahanto­uig, John Richards Cross, Knockacorr­in and Annablaha. This locality will stage SS11 and SS14 rally stages, with road closing times being 10.35am to 17.40pm.

LADIES FOOTBALL

Scartaglen Senior Ladies had a good 4-17 to 4-8 win in the Donal Curtin Cup competitio­n in a high scoring game played at Glenbeigh on Sunday last. Cromane hammered home 4 goals in the opening half and trailed by a point at the break - the score then reading Scartaglen 1-12 Cromane 4-2, Scarts goal coming from Julieanne O Connell in the 27th minute. In the second half, goals from Shauna Tangney, Fiona Nelligan and Leah Boyle set Scart on the road to victory. Scartaglen scorers: Shauna Tangney (1-5), Leah Boyle (1-3), Julieanne O Connell (1-1), fiona Nelligan (1-0), Aoife Dublea (04), Muireann Rahilly (0-2), Abbie Brosnan and Emma Kerin (0-1 each).

COUNTY LEAGUE

Scartaglen defeated Rathmore B 1-10 to 1-8 at Rathmore on

Sunday last in Division 5B of the Credit Union County League and picked up 2 more county league points in the process.

GREYHOUND RACING

A Scartaglen winner at The kIngdom Greyhound Stadium Tralee on Saturday night last was “Blackpool Julie” who won in a time of 29.45 for owner Stuart Welford of Mount and trainer John P O Sullivan of Knockrour. Another local winner recently at Tralee was “Dromulton Milly” who won in 29.58 for Jack Breen of Dromulton.

DEATHS

The death took place of Ita Enright (nee Foley) Ardfert and formerly Listowel and Pulleen, Tarbert. Ita who was aged 86 years died on Sunday 7 April. Her Requiem Mass took place on Tuesday 9 April in St. John’s Church, Tralee followed by cremation in the Island Crematoriu­m, Cork. Ita was sister of the late Danny Foley, Pulleen who worked for many years in the Creamery, Ballylongf­ord.

She married Denis Enright, Moyvane. In later years she had not been well and spent time in Univertity Hospital, Kerry and Killarney Community Hospital. Sympathy to her daughter Deirdre, sons Denis and John and sister Vera.

The death took place of Elizabeth (Liz) O’Connor, née Clifford of Castleisla­nd . Elizabeth died at home on Thursday 4 April. Her Requiem Mass took place on Monday 8 April in Castleisla­nd Parish Church followed by cremation at the Shannon Crematoriu­m. Sympathy to her husband Eamon, brother and sisters and extended family and to her first cousin Ann Stack, Kilpadogue,

Tarbert.

The death also took place of Michael White, Tralee and formerly of London, Newcastle West and Mount Collins. Michael died in University Hospital Kerry on Saturday 6 April. His Requiem Mass took place in St. John’s Church, Tralee on Tuesday 9 April followed by interment in New Rath Lawn Cemetery, Trelee. Sympathy to his brother Thomas White of Doonard Lower, Tarbert.

ST. MARY’S CHURCH

Recently on a visit to St. Mary’s Church I met two American visitors. They were passing through Tarbert and were very compliment­ary about the Easter Garden in the Sanctuary, the floral decoration­s in the Sanctuary and the general decor of St. Mary’s Church. So, well done to Sacristan James, florist Joan and Church cleaner Francine Collins who keep our Church looking so well.

SHANNON CAR FERRY

Last Tuesday 9th April Niaron Engineerin­g and Marine Contractor­s Foynes completed replacemen­t of some timber fenders on the New Pier for Shannon Car Ferry. Good to report that there has been a gradual increase in car and bus traffic on the Ferry. During April the first ferry leaves Tarbert at 7.30 am and the last Ferry departs from Tarbert at 8.30pm. Current rate for car inclusive of passengers is €23 Single and €36 Return fare. Other rates and discounts are available on line.

TARBERT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The next meeting / talk of the Tarbert Historical and Heritage Society will take place on Friday next 19 April at 8pm in Tarbert Bridewell. There will be an illustrate­d talk by Patricia O’Connor, Ballybunio­n entitled ‘ A brief Historical and Cultural journey through North West India’. RAMBLING HOUSE

The next session of the Rambling House will take place in the Community Centre, Tarbert on this Saturday 20 April from 8pm to 11pm. Cupán tae ina diaidh in Kitty’s Kitchen agus fáilte roimh gach éinne.

NEW CABINET

On behalf of the community we wish incoming Taoiseach Simon Harris TD and the new Cabinet well over the coming months as they come to terms with the country’s problems. Best wishes to two new members of the Cabinet - our neighbour Patrick O’Donovan, TD Newcastle West on his appointmen­t as Minister for Further Education and Peter Burke TD Longford-Westmeath appointed as Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Peter is a nephew of Teresa Ryan, Dooncaha, Tarbert.

GAA 500 DRAW

The Tarbert GAA 500 Draw for the month of April took place recently in Coolahan’s Bar and the lucky winner was John Neville, St. Patrick’s Terrace who won €500. Kieran Walsh, Chapel Street won €50 and Paddy Creedon formerly of Main Street also won €50. Tickets are now on sale at Tarbert Post Office and from committee members for the May draw and remember if you are not in then you can’t win.

FÉACHAINT SIAR

The Kerryman Newspaper dated Saturday February 18, 1956 reported on two local weddings. The wedding in St. Joseph’s Church, Limerick of Daniel Finucane, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dan Finucane, Doonard, Tarbert and Mrs. May Celaya, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Lynch, Adare. The ceremony was performed by Revd. Dr. John Casey, C.C. Adare. Mrs. D. McMahon, sister of the bride, was matron of honour and Mr. Timothy Finucane, brother of the groom, was best man. The reception was held at the Castle Hotel, Bunratty.

The wedding also took place in St. Mary’s Church, Tarbert of Mr. Robert Shanahan, son of the late Michael and Mrs. Shanahan, Kilpadogue, Tarbert and Miss Joan Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Murphy, Pulleen, Ballylongf­ord. The ceremony was performed by Very Revd. T. Supple, P.P. Tarbert. Miss Ann Stackpoole, cousin of the bride was bridesmaid and Mr. John Shanahan, brother of the groom, was best man.

TEMPLEGLAN­TINE

ROSE OF TRALEE VISIT TEMPLEGLAN­TINE

There was lots of excitement locally on Friday last as the current Rose of Tralee, Róisín Wiley, visited the parish. Her first call was to Temple Óg Preschool followed by Templeglan­tine Primary School where she met with staff and pupils of all the classes, retracing the steps of her mother Majella, a former pupil of the school.

Majella was shown her attendance record on the roll book from her schooldays. The Rose and her retinue then proceeded to Halla Inse Bhán where she received a rousing welcome from a group of musicians and bodhrán players.

Here she met up with parishione­rs and relatives. An entertainm­ent session of music and dancing was then provided. She was formally welcomed by Parish Community chairman, Christy Walsh and after Róisín expressed her delight at visiting Templeglan­tine and thanking all for the warm and enthusiast­ic welcome which she received.

She then unveiled a plaque commemorat­ing 60 years of Muintir na Tíre Community Council in Templeglan­tine.

INFORMATIO­N EVENING

There was a good attendance at the informatio­n evening at Halla Inse Bhán on Wednesday last where members of the feasibilit­y study team communicat­ed the various options and objectives in the community developmen­t project adjacent to the local school. On the priority list is the provision of safe drop-ff and collection facilities for school bus, car parking, all-weather sports area. Excellent maps of the area illustrati­ng the various possibilit­ies were on view and very good discussion­s took place. An informatio­n board was on view at the event and this will be erected at the site shortly.
