Fenit to celebrate its natural heritage

- BY SINEAD KELLEHER

WITH summer having arrived in Kerry there is good news for Fenit village ahead of this weekend’s Wild Mind Festival as the car park in the village is to re-open head of schedule.

The decision to close the northern section of the car park in Fenit for eight weeks to facilitate Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd., who required additional storage space in Fenit, led to some traffic chaos in the village during busy weekends. Although alternative car parking arrangements were put in place in O’Sullivan’s field but few motorists used the facility.

However, good news emerged this week that the car park is now to re-open ahead of schedule as Liebherr no longer need the space and the car park will be fully functional again this week.

This is just ahead of the local festival which is growing each year and which is hoped will be another great success this weekend.

The festival celebrates what the coastal village has right on its own doorstep with a focus on nature, heritage and environment.

The festival promises a stellar line-up of speakers focusing on the environment as well as a host of fun events including film screenings, music, workshops and water sports in family fun filled weekend.

The festival opens at the specially erected Festival Barn on Friday evening on Friday, April 26 at 6pm with talk from Irish innovator Fionn Ferreira who is on a mission to eradicate microplastic pollution.

This will be following by the screening of Birdsong by Cork Ornithologist Sean Ronayne who is on a mission to record the sound of every bird species.

Later on Friday there will be music by Donal Dineen and Paudi Cronin at Tralee Bay Sailing Club.

Saturday and Sunday have a host of events throughout the day and night including a series of environmental talks and workshops including the Big Beach Biodiversity Survey which locals are urged to join to learn about the bio-diversity of the area.

There will be talks by locals from the community who are sharing their unique environmental stories and projects as well as on re-imaging our peatlands and on Moths and on how communities can help protect their environment. Full details are on the Wild Mind Festival website.
