ALZHEIMERS TEA DAY

The Alzgheimers Society of Ireland is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the annual tea day this year. Alzheimers Tea Day will be on Thursday May 2nd. At least 30 people in Ireland are diagnosed with dementia every single day and the number of people diagnosed is expected to double in the next 25 years. About 64,000 people are living with dementia in this country, over the past 30 years Tea Day has helped to raise €10,000,000 to support and help those affected by Alzheimers.

The late Mary Murphy of Adriville who died last year held a Tea Day in her home for 20 years and raised over €22,000 for the society in question - a wonderful lady who cared to remember every year for those who can no longer remember themselves. You can register on www.teaday.ie to receive your free organisers toolkit loaded with all you need to host a successful Tea Day event.

LADIES FOOTBALL

Scartaglen Minor Ladies football team took on Dr. Crokes at Lewis Road, Killarney on Monday evening April 15 in the East Kerry Minor Competition. Scart were just pipped in this one, the final score being Dr. Crokes 4-2 Scartaglen 2-7. This was a game of two halves with the Killarney ladies holding sway in the opening half, at the end of which they led by 2-2 to 0-1. In the last quarter of the second half Scart turned up the pressure with Emma Daly and Maggie Riordan in good scoring form. In the end the clock caught up with Scart and at the final whistle only a single point divided the sides. This was a good performance from Scartaglen, it was a game they could have won, a draw perhaps would have been a fair result, but some costly misses in the first half probably denied them victory on the evening.

Scartaglen scorers: Emma Daly (2-2), Maggie Riordan (0-3), Ellie Mai Walsh and Millie O Halloran (0-1 each).

Scartaglen U12s travelled to Fossa on Wednesday evening April 17th to play that team in the newly structured LGFA Go Games. It was an excellent challenge and a very good learning experience for the Scartaglen girls, some of whom were playing their first game at U12 level. Scartaglen/Cordal U16s played Fossa at Fossa on Thursday evening of last week in the East Kerry U16 competition. This ended in an easy win for Fossa, the final score being Fossa 7-9 Scart/Cordal 1-5. At half time it was 2-4 to 2-1 to Fossa, Emma Daly getting the goal for the visitors in the 20th minute. Fossa dominated the second half too and went on to score a further 5-4 with Scart/Cordal adding 4 points to the first half tally. Scorers for Scart/Cordal: Emma Daly (1-3), Alannah Kelliher and Anna McCarthy (0-1 each).

Scartaglen Senior Ladies had a convincing 3-12 to 0-9 victory over Dr. Crokes in The Donal Curtin Cup when the sides met at sun kissed Cordal on Sunday afternoon last. Scart were always moving well in this game and they led at the break 1-7 to 0-7, Katie Sugrue getting the goal for Scart just before half time. Two further goals for Scart in the second half from Muireann Rahilly and Denise Dunlea set up the local ladies for victory. Scartaglen scorers: Muireann Rahilly (1-4), Katie Sugrue (10), Denise Dunlea (1-0), Shauna Tangney (0-3), Leah Boyle and Emma Kerin (0-1 each).

Scartaglen/Cordal U14s got their season off to a winning start when they had a comprehensive 5-10 to 3-4 victory over Na Gaeil at Cordal on Sunday evening last. The local combination got three goals in the opening half and they led at the break 3-3 to 0-3. The local side again controlled much of the second half and went onto to add a further 2-7 to their first half tally with the Tralee girls scoring 3 goals in that half. Scorers for Scartaglen/Cordal: Rachel O Donoghue (2-1), Ciara O Donoghue (2-0), Alice O Connor (1-0), Anna McCarthy (0-4), Seana Walsh (02), Caoimhe Fleming, Roisin O Donoghue and Brid McCarthy (0-1 each).
