BALLYLONGFORD MARIAN GROTTO

We would like to thank everyone who attended our annual May procession.

The weather was good to us and it was very well attended.

We would like to offer a special word of thanks to the following people:

Fr Michael Hussey celebrated a lovely mass in such a beautiful setting. He was assisted by Padraig O’Conchubhair.

Patricia Pierce (from the CE Scheme) did a wonderful job of cleaning the procession route from the Church Yard to the Grotto, and also painted the altar at the Grotto.

Martin Donovan and Micheal Dennehy gave the grotto a new coat of paint, with the statue of Bernadette given special attention by Mary Finucane.

Our Lady’s halo was renewed by the hand of Sean Lynch.

Noreen Kennelly provided the beautiful flowers arranged on the altar.

Ann Lanigan and Margaret Dennehy took care of the statue of our Lady of Fatima.

Tom Kennedy generously provided a figure of Christ imported from Italy to place on the cross that was created by Brian Hackett, taking his inspiration from our historic Lislaughtin Cross. This cross accompanied our Lady was carried by Sean Og and Tomas Lynch. John O’Shea, John O’Sullivan, Rory Dennehy and Michael Horgan carried the statue of our Lady from the church to the grotto.

Paul Mulvihill and Mikey Carrig, took care of seating and stewarding on the night.

The choir was represented by Karina, Bridie Enright, Beatrice Carmody.

At the end of the mass, Fr Hussey gave a short talk on the history of the grotto.

Representing Asdee Mary Keane gave a beautiful rendition of the ballad The Village of Asdee.

And last, but never least, Karina O’Donoghue and Dierdre Finucane were on hand to make sure that everyone followed orders!

We would also like to invite you all to a rosary in memory of all those involved in the creation of the grotto and deceased parishioners. Following the rosary, an historic talk will be given concerning those who built the grotto and celebrated its opening. The venue is the grotto itself, on the evening of Friday 24th May at 7pm. Everybody welcome!

BROSNA

REST IN PEACE

The Parish said farewell to Mrs Carroll last week. A lovely lady who is remembered for her gentleness and elegance. Always beautifully dressed, a woman who never aged in looks or attitude. You will be sadly missed by your family, friends and neighbours. May you rest in peace.

GAA UPDATES

Brosna had a lively, fast paced encounter with Moyvane on Saturday. On a still evening, with the sun creeping towards Ballyb, Brosna met the Moyvane force on their home sod. The scoring was low but the speed and intensity was high. A lot of wides by both sides gave little reward for much effort. Brosna came out the victors with the most tantalizing of margins 3 points although the last 5 minutes it could have gone to a draw. Notables scorers on the night Adam Barry, Paul Walsh, Danny Moriarty. Maurice Lane is living up to his reputation at under age level too with fine scores. A quality point from David Horan too who’s not afraid of hard work in defence. Roll on, Brosna.

COMMUNION

First Holy Communion on Saturday 18th May in the Church of the Assumption, Knockaclarig. Special mention to Class teacher, Ms. Charlotte Collins who prepared the children with the help of SNA Ms Deirdre Collins. The wonderful pupils in 2nd Class: Denis Curtin, Aoife Horgan, Conor Cahill, Shauna Walsh, Aaron Collins, Shane Collins and Makayla Fleming. Fr. Martin played an important role in preparing the children. They had a monthly mass in Knockaclarig where the children and their parents participated. Fr. Martin also visited the class regularly and attended rehearsals. Not forgetting Catherine Nash who adds so much to the celebrations with music and singing. Well done Principal, Ms Siobhan Lenihan for executive supervision of the entire process.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

We take comfort in known quantities. It’s why we love to check the weather before we go to paint a gate. It creates a sense of safety and preparedness. But this desire for accurate prediction can result in stress, relationship drama and unhappiness when we apply this metric to our fellow humans. When we think we know someone, we box them into a place where we expect them to act or speak in a specific way. It’s how we cope with demanding family members or coworkers. We enter into each encounter with them absolutely sure of how they will act. But once we’ve boxed them in we remove the possibility that they may change their approach. Remember whatever made them wonderful or tricky can change. Try to suspend any fixed notions about who a person is. Leave room for them to surprise you with kindness or space for them to have a bad day.

It’s the latitude we would hope to receive ourselves. Embrace with gentleness and understanding the changes in others and within ourselves.
