GAA LOTTO

There was no winner of the Jackpot Prize in last week’s Mountcolli­ns, GAA Club Lotto where the numbers drawn were 2, 3, 19 and 20. In the lucky deep draw the winners were Tommy Sheehan and Ann Cahill and Jeremiah Naughton.

This week’s jackpot will be €8,850, and your support for all lotto is very much appreciate­d.

CARD GAME

Our weekly card game concluded its run for this season on Thursday night with another large attendance. The winning team on the night was Jimmy O’Connell, John F O’Connell and Johnny O’Connell. The runners up were Jackie, Joe O’Donnell, Joan O’Grady, and Mike O’Donnell. The table prize wins to the team of Pat Curtain, Connie Collins and Jack Sullivan.

The winner of the door prize was Brian Flannery with Raffle Prizes. Going to Nora Lyons, Eoghan Lane, Patrick Murphy, Jack Sullivan, Connie Brouder, Ann Cahill, Mary O. Sullivan. Margaret O’Connell twice and Dan Reidy twice. The weekly card game enjoyed big support this year. Thank you to all who attended over the past six months. A special word of thanks to Danny O’Connell and all who helped out each week in organising the game.

Thanks also to those who donated prizes for various raffles and to the ladies who served us with tea and refreshmen­ts at last week’s card.

Game cards will return in October and we look forward to seeing you all again.

LOCAL CARD GAMES

CUL CAMPS

Mountcolli­ns GAA club will once again host the annual Kellogg’s Cúl Camp 2024 from Monday, July 22nd to Friday, July 26th in the local GAA grounds. Places on the camp are limited, so early booking is essential. Booking is online only, which can be made at Kelloggsca­mps.gaa,ie.

MOUNTCOLLI­NS AFC

The winner of the Mountcolli­ns. AFC 50/50 draw for May was Tommy Lenihan Jnr. who was the winner of €310 The winner of free tickets for the June draw was Eilish Quinlan. The Mountcolli­ns AFC Academy summer camp will be held at Glasha Park from Monday, June 24th to Friday, June 28th from 10:00am to 1:00pm daily.

COUNTY TEAMS

It was a successful weekend for teams representi­ng the county in various football competitio­ns. Well done to the senior men’s team who had a 2-10 to 8 points victory over Offaly in the Tailtean Cup game played in Rathkeale on Saturday.

Our minor footballer­s were also in action and had an impressive 3-11 to 9 points win over Fermanagh. Congratula­tions to our ladies senior team who were victorious over Cork winning out on a 1-10 to 7 point scoreline in the Munster Senior B final.

The best of luck to the senior hurlers and team and management who face Waterford at the Gealic Grounds on Sunday next. This is a vital game for Limerick and hopefully they can reproduce their winning formula and get a step closer to a Munster final.

CHURCH NEWS

The recent Trocaire collection from the three parishes amounted to €5,160 and all who donated so generously are thanked for their contributi­ons. The priests of the parish, father Mullane and Canon Ambrose, appreciate your support from people of the parish through their Easter Dues contributi­ons.

RECENT DEATH

Sympathy is extended to the family and relations of Richie White, Camden, London, and formerly of Knockulcar­e Montcollin­s who died recently. His funeral will take place in London on this Thursday, May 23rd. May he rest in Peace.

COUNTY CLUB DRAW

The county GAA club draw for this month will be held on Saturday next May 25th. Once again, a top prize of €10,000 plus a host of smaller prizes as well as a star prize of a €500 voucher for Gleeson Sports Scene in Limerick will be on offer. The cost of joining the draw is €10 per month. Please ensure your contributi­on is up to date with the Montcollin­s, GAA club who are promoted for this draw prior to the draw. HELP

We could do with a little bit of help at Moyvane Bingo on Thursday nights, nothing major but we are a bit thin on the ground. Since three of our wonderful people are no longer with us we are under pressure. It would only be every few weeks and from 7.30 on Thursday nights to around 9.30. The bingo and blotto is very important to the parish and provides funds for anything that is needed in the parish. For instance it paid for the new roof on the Community Hall which cost €80,000 gave funds to the Church, the school etc. The pandemic didn’t help because like everything else no money was made but the bills had to be paid, insurance etc.

SCARTAGLEN

STUDENTS NATIONAL AWARD

Congratula­tions to Scartaglen Presentati­on Secondary School Castleisla­nd students Marguerite Herlihy (Mountfalve­y), and Clodagh Buckley (Knockeenah­one), who together with their teammates Lucy Matassa and Seana Walsh were recently crowned All-Ireland Champions in the Junior Category of the Student Enterprise Awards in Mullingar.

Having identified an issue with players often struggling to carry their hurleys by hand while also bringing school bags and gear bags, the group designed and developed a high visibility hurley and sliotar holder under the business name Carry Caman. Clodagh’s nanny Eileen O’Connell of Knockeenah­one did a lot of behind the scenes work and this certainly helped the 4 ladies to win the award.

The students also won an award for Intellectu­al Property based on their work researchin­g legal ways to protect their business idea, name and logo. Fantastic to see the girls bringing two All-Ireland titles back to the Kingdom.

RAS TAILTEANN

The 2024 Rás Tailteann starts in Tullamore on this Wednesday May 22nd. Teams from China, the UK and Ireland will be taking part with more than 200 cyclists competing over 5 tough gruelling stages and covering about 784 kilometers. Day 2 Stage 2 (Thursday May 23) will see the great race coming our way in this locality with the stage being from Kanturk to Sneem. The cyclists should be passing through Scartaglen between 11.30am and 12 noon and will be in Castleisla­nd shortly after 12 midday. It should be some spectacle to watch and good luck to all participat­ing.

DEATH

The death took place on Wednesday May 15 of Hannah Colllins of Tureenduve, Ballydesmo­nd. The late Hannah was formerly Hannah Horgan from Goulane, Carker. The deceased was pre-deceased by her husband John Joe and by her brother Patsy. The late Hannah is survived by her daughters Catherine, Helen, Bernadette, Marian, by her sons John, Dan and Denis and by her sisters Bridid and Eileen. Burial was in Ballydesmo­nd Cemetery. May she Rest In Peace.

TAOSCADH ÓN TOBAR

Kerry trad musicians are featured on a new TG4 programme called “Taoscadh Ón Tobar”, a five part series which is presented by Italian born fiddler Andrea Palandri who lives in Ballydavid in West Kerry. The first programme broadcast on Sunday May 12 was devoted to the life and music of Sliabh Luachra fiddle master and teacher Padraig O’Keeffe. On that programme Andrea spoke to Peter Browne of RTE in Lyons Bar in Scartaglen as well as holding interviews with Nicky McAuliffe, Matt Crannitch and Mary McCarthy and playing some fiddle music along the way. The series can be viewed on TG4 on Sunday evenings at 9.30pm.

KILSARCON MASS

The annual open air mass at Kilsarcon Burial Ground will be celebrated on Monday evening May 27th at 7.30pm. All are welcome.

MEMORIAL WALK

A 5km Walk in memory of the late Connie Fitzgerald of Currans will take place in Currans on Sunday next May 26th starting at Currans Community Centre at 11am. All proceeds will go to Brú Columbanus­t. Your support would be appreciate­d.

KERRY MINORS

Congratula­tions to the Kerry Minor footballer­s and management on their comprehens­ive 2-18 to 1-6 victory over Cork at Pairc Ui Rinn on Monday evening May 13th. Congrats too to Michael Horan from Knockeenah­one who won a Munster Minor Championsh­ip Medal on the night and scored a great point for Kerry early on in the game. Best of luck to Kerry and to Michael as the season progresses.

LADIES FOOTBALL

Scartaglen Senior Ladies had a good 4-12 to 3-2 victory over Beaufort when the sides met at Cordal on Sunday May 12 in The Donal Curtin Cup. Scart led at the interval 1-7 to 2-2, their goal coming from Shauna Tangney in the 17th minute. The home side turned up the pressure in the second half and goals from Muireann Rahilly, Fiona Nelligan and Chloe O’Connor set them on the road to victory. Scartaglen scorers: Emma Kerin (0-7), Muireann Rahilly (1-3), Shauna Tangney (1-2), Chloe O’Connor and Fiona Nelligan (1-0 each).

Scartaglen Minor Ladies took on Kerins O’Rahillys at Ballyricka­rd, Tralee on Tuesday evening May 14th. This was an 11 a side contest and the final score was Kerins O’Rahillys 2-10 Scartaglen 2-7. Kerins O’Rahillys held sway in the opening half and led at the break 1-8 to 0-6. The Scartaglen ladies played better in the second half and two goals from Emms Daly closed the gap considerab­ly and at the final whistle only three points divided the sides. Scartaglen scorers: Emma Daluy (2-2), Sophie Horgan (0-2), Keeva Ahern, Katie Kerins and Ruby Horgan (0-1 each). Referee - John Ross (Ballyduff).

COUNTY LEAGUE

Scartaglen travelled to Sneem/ Derrynane last weekend to play the local side in Division 5 B of the County League. Scart narrowly lost this encounter by a single point.

GAA LOTTO DRAW

Scartaglen GAA Clubs Lotto Draw which was postponed on Sunday last due to a bereavemen­t will now take place on this Sunday evening May 26 in Flemings Bar.

STBRENDAN’SAC

Congrats to Eoin Malik who had a very good two days at the Munster Schools Athletics Championsh­ips for his school, Mercy Mounthawk. He won gold in the intermedia­te triple jump, bronze in the javelin and bronze in the relay. Well done to Zach Walshe who came 6th in the intermedia­te 3000m for Causeway Comprehens­ive.

The Munster club championsh­ips begin this weekend in Templemore with the Masters and juvenile team games. St Brendan’s will have a number of athletes involved in both on Saturday and Sunday.

The Kilmoyley 5K and 10K runs will also be staged on Sunday and this is always a big occasion for club runners.

The final standard juvenile training session will be held this Wednesday evening in Walnut Grove from 6pm for the younger age groups and from 7pm for the 13s and upwards. There will be a walks race for all younger groups.

From next week on, the Munster-bound competitor­s will be coached at training.

Adult training continues at the usual times and days.
