Hugs and kisses on the streets of Dingle

THOUSANDS WELCOME THE NEW YEAR

IT was a night to remember in Dingle as young and old thronged the West Kerry town to usher in 2013.

The festivities began earlier in the day as the official programme for The Gathering was launched at Leabharlann an Daingin followed by a projection, curated by Andrew Duggan, of images entitled ‘Móide’ at the site of the town’s old ice plant.

At approximately 9.30pm Bliain Na Gaeilge was officially launched at the Marina, heralding in a year of festivities throughout the length and breadth of the country to coincide with The Gathering.

After a rendition of Auld Lang Syne as Gaeilge was wrapped up, a thrilling fireworks display took place at the head of the Marina much to the delight of all present.

The town continued to heave under the influx of New Year’s revellers until the Dingle Fife and Drum Band emerged from O’Flaherty’s pub as they undertook a round of the town in anticipation of the countdown to the New Year that was underway at the Mall Bridge, under the supervision of Diarmuid Ó Conchúir.

After the dying minutes and seconds of the old year were counted down, 2013 was welcomed with hugs and kisses by the throng who packed the streets.

Afterwards Richard Williams of the Dingle Business Chamber paid tribute to the many local businesses and individuals who have funded the town’s New Year’s festivities, despite challenging economic times.
