150 cyclists in charitable spin
ST BRENDAN’S College was a hive of activity on St Stephen’s Day as over 150 cyclists gathered at the Killarney school for its inaugural ‘Naughty or Nice’ Charity Cycle Challenge.
Organised by the Parents’ Association, in conjunction with Christmas in Killarney, cyclists were greeted by strong winds and intermittent rain as they set off on one of two ‘Christmas dinner busting’ routes.
The more adventurous took to the roads around Glencar for the ‘ naughty’ 70 kilometre cycle while others played it a little safer with a more manageable ‘nice’ 30 kilometre cycle out to Beaufort and back.
Co-organiser Mary Collier, Secretary of St Brendan’s Parents’ Association, said the weather certainly didn’t dampen the festive spirit.
“It was a fantastic effort by all involved, a great atmosphere full of Christmas spirit and we wish to say a huge thanks to the many entrants who came out to support our cause, particularly in the day that was in it,” she stated.
Joining the ‘ veterans’ in the peleton were approximately 16 Leaving Cert students – the event was open to over 16s only – as well as past pupils and parents of pupils.
“We were particularly delighted to see a few fathers and sons out which made it a special family day for some. We’ll definitely look into it again next year, although the date may be under review,” Mary added with a smile.
Money raised will go towards the St Brendan’s College Development Fund for student welfare and other projects.
