Badminton action resumes with league finals down for decision
WITH the Christmas festivities over for another year the badminton fraternity of Kerry are immediately back into action with the finals of the ladies and mens leagues due to be played in the Presentation Gym, Tralee on Wednesday January 9.
These events for divisions 3 and 4, with the mens sections being sponsored by Ashe’s Bar, Glenbeigh, and the ladies competitions sponsored by Agri Auto Parts of Tralee and Listowel, commenced in October last with over 20 teams competing and, remarkably, the four finals on January 9 will see Tralee's County Club involved in all four deciders which is a tremendous achievement by the Tralee Club.
In the division 3 ladies final Tralee take on SneemIveragh whilst the division 3 men take on Killarney.
In the division 4 deciders it will Tralee v Moyvane in both and if the preliminary rounds are any guideline, Badminton enthusiasts are indeed guaranteed a feast of Badminton on the night.
Listowel Tournaments The Listowel Badminton Club host their annual tournaments on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday January 12/13.
The Saturday programme caters for divisions 1 & 2 players, commencing with both ladies and mens doubles and is open to all players throughout the land within the new grading system if divisions B, C, D and E.
This will be followed by the 42nd annual mixed doubles competition catering for the same standard of players and this competition is the longest running Club tournament in the whole of Ireland.
Listowel's annual veterans competition, over 45s, will also be played on the Saturday The Sunday programme caters for Divisions 3, 4 and 5 and this a normally a huge event. All interested players are reminded that entry forms for all the Listowel competitions have been sent to all clubs which gives the starting times for each event.
Kerry Schools A reminder to all that the Kerry schools competitions, for both boys and girls, will be played at the Killarney Sports Centre on Thursday January 15.
Schools who wish to compete are requested to contact Mrs. Eileen Roche, Glin Road, Moyvane, 087 6679943, without delay. Munster championships The Killarney venue will once again host most of the Munster Championships over the coming months. The first of these will be both the the Senior 2 and the Graduate Championships to be played on Sunday January 20.
It is hoped that as many Kerry players as possible will enter for both of these competitions.
Kerry singles championships The following Sunday, January 27 will see the start of the Sweeney's Costcutters Kerry Badminton County Championships.
These are the singles championships for both ladies and men for divisions 1, 3 and 5. and Killarney will again be the venue for these championships, commencing at 2pm.
Again all players are requested to enter on or before the official closing date on the entry form.
Winners of all Kerry Championships over the past season are requested to return the various Cups won to Mrs. Carmel Hudson, Moyvane, or to their own club officials as soon as possible.
