KERRY COUPLE’S WEDDING CAPER FILM GROWS INTO A WORLDWIDE HIT

- By DÓNAL NOLAN

GUESTS at a wedding in The Dunloe Hotel held their breath as the couple’s best man informed all how he had forgotten the big speech and just needed to pop out for a few minutes to get it.

He dashed out of the hall alongside the groom and groomsman, as guests looked to one another in bemusement.

That’s when the big screen lit up in a video now going a little ‘viral’ on YouTube, however.

Darren Deasy and Tracey Lynchs’ big day appeared to be coming a cropper as best man Alan Curran faltered on the point of starting the speech expected of him.

Remembering he had left it in Kate Kearney’s Pub, Alan apologised, turned off the mic and made swiftly for the door with Darren and their groomsman as the big screen flickered into life.

What ensued was an hilarious six-minute video - filmed by Killorglin-based videographer Brendan Reidy - in supposed realtime of the boys’ adventure-filled trip up the Gap, starting as they roared out of the Dunloe entrance in a vintage Daihatsu Charmant souped up with a 4-litre V8 Lexus engine.

The gravel went flying as the gang raced for Kate Kearneys’. But disaster struck just around the corner with a puncture.

Enter a hapless motorbiker, stopping to help and getting a gracious wrench to the back of his head from the panicked lads, before they chucked him into a ditch to let Darren tear off up the Gap on his bike.

Meanwhile, back in the Dunloe Darren’s father William Deasy conspicuously took a phone call before he, too, dashed out - only to reappear on screen with his truck seconds later at the side of the road to help the boys out of their pickle.

All ended well, suffice to say, with the lads returning to a thunderous welcome at the reception.

“We filmed it about a month beforehand,” self-confessed ‘petrolhead’ Darren told The Kerryman.

“We shot it in under four hours and it was planned to perfection with every scene down to a tee. To be honest, I didn’t want to have a best man speech full of yarns about me on the motorbike, so I said we would keep it clean and shoot the video to provide the fun element!”

Darren, Alan and Brendan certainly succeeded in that much.

But Darren, a native of Timoleague in West Cork and Tracey, a native of Fenit, were thwarted in one other big plan as real life mirrored art.

Their ‘minimoon’ break abroad had to be postponed due to a break of a different kind the following day, sadly, when Darren caught his shoelace in a motorbike back in Milltown, falling off and breaking his wrist and arm. There’s no time to be depressed though as friends and neighbours communicate their delight over the video.

“I can’t go anywhere without people asking about the video and laughing!” As Cahersiveen man Alan also pointed out on the return to the Dunloe, no motorcyclists were really harmed in the making of the vid. It’s now clocked up over 4,200 views on YouTube under title ‘Best Man Forgets His Speech - What Happens Next?’
