The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
ALL SET FOR INAUGURAL CASTLEMAINE CYCLE
THERE’S a first time for everything which is why the team at Kiltallagh National School in Castlemaine have decided to put pedal power to the fore this year as part of a special school fundraiser which takes place on Saturday, May 20.
Two routes of 45km and 90km in the beautiful mid Kerry countryside were devised by Peter Clendennen - an accomplished cyclist and parent to one of the children at the school. The event is also organised in conjunction with the Parents’ Association.
The cycle is billed as an ideal prep for The Ring of Kerry and Ring of Beara cycles later this summer. There will be some well-earned food stations laid on along the route with further refreshments and entertainment at the finish line for what promises to be a wonderful family event. Special finish line activities are also planned for children to help cap the perfect day.
“This is our first year and we’re hoping the cycle might become an annual event if successful. We’re asking the wider school community, including past pupils, to get involved,” said Paula Ní Bhriain, Principal at Kiltallagh NS.
“We try to offer children a broad curriculum within the school and we bring in a specialist PE teacher and artist in residence. Our aim is to expand such initiatives for the school. This is all self-funded and we’re a small school, which means we’re drawing on the same pool of parents all the time. With this cycle it gives us an opportunity to fundraise in the wider community.”
Registration for the cycle is from 8.30am at Kiltallagh NS and the cycle commences at 10am sharp from the Community Centre, which is directly adjacent to the school where ample parking is provided.
