Castleisland woman appointed manager of Touring Boxing Team

-

FOR the second time in a matter of weeks Castleisland has been mentioned in the one sentence with Europe and Sport. A couple of weeks ago it was the local basketballers, now it’s boxing and an honour which has befallen a local woman.

Jennifer O’Sullivan-Coffey has been handed the role of manager of the Irish boxing team which flew out to the Romania city of Iasa earlier this week.

The Irish team was invited to take part in the annual International Elite Men’s and Women’s Golden Belt Nicolae Linca Boxing Tournament which goes on all this week in the city known as the Cultural Capital of Romania.

A delighted Jennifer, a founder member of the Castleisland based Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club and a Top Table Duty officer at county board level, got the news by email at the weekend.

“I’m delighted and deeply honoured to be appointed manager for an international tournament. I have been interested in boxing all of my life really and I’m lucky that we have a great club here in my own home town,” said Jennifer.

“This is my first time travelling as team manager and I’m looking forward to the experience. I’m honoured to be asked as boxing is my passion and I enjoy very much working with the young people here at home and now on this level – I’m delighted,” she concluded.

Jennifer’s grand-dad, the late Timmy Buckley, would be a proud man today. He was lifelong devotee of the sport almost up to the time of his death on March 25and he was reputed to be no slouch in the ring in his day.
