Handball players’ hands full with awards
THERE was a trophy laden awards night held in the Towers Hotel, Glenbeigh where all the handball winners over the last 12 months were presented with their awards.
The gala night for the sport pays tribute to those who were successful on the court and to those who are doing some Trojan work behind the scenes.
From the playing side Dominic Lynch and John Joe Quirke received an award to make their recent All Ireland Over 35’s success. The Feile team made up of Sean Quirke, Diarmuid McGillicuddy, Liam Smith and Darragh Blennerhasset were also honoured on the night.
Jack O’Shea’s win in the 1 Wall Nationals saw him pick up his award while Ballymac’s Dara Keane picked up his award for his recent All Ireland U-17 win.
The trophies for the annual Leagues were also presented on the night with John Michael O’Sullivan, Brian McEvoy, Stephen O’Shea, John Clifford, Anthony Clifford and Ger O’Sullivan being honoured for their wins.
Off the handball court’s an amount of work goes on behind the scenes and Club Chairman Eoin Riordan and Theresa Quirke were presented with awards for the work they have done over the last 12 months while Dominic Lynch presented a well-deserved award to Christy Moriarty for the years of work he has done for handball in the county.
Elsewhere, Glenbeigh duo Dominic Lynch and John Joe Quirke were defeated in their All Ireland Hardball senior semi-final. They lost out to the Dublin pairing of Eoin Kennedy and Karl Brown, going down 21-12, 21-4.
Two of the four will meet again next weekend in the All Ireland Hardball Senior Singles semi-final when Dominic Lynch takes on Eoin Kennedy on Sunday.
Also next weekend in the All Ireland Hardball Junior singles semi-final Glenbeigh’s Jack O’Shea will meet Meath’s Peter Reilly. There are no venues set for these games at the time of going to print.
