WORLD FIDDLE DAY

On this Saturday May 20th, World Fiddle Day will be celebrated in Scartaglin and there’s a wonderful programme of events and sessions to be enjoyed by musicians and patrons alike. On Friday evening May 19th, there’s a gathering session at 9.30pm in the village with visiting musicians.

Then on Saturday at 12 noon, there’s the official opening in Lyons Bar with Matt Cranitch. At 2pm there’s a full free days of activities planned for visitors to the event in the Heritage Centre with a full café serving dinners, teas and coffees etc and one can come in and enjoy literary and music events while you have something to eat.

At the same location, there’s a fantastic exhibition of old photos, newspaper cuttings and clippings on display with over 250 exhibits and this exhibition is being launched by Nicholas McAuliffe at 2pm.

At 3pm there’s a poetry session A Crows Jagged Flight featuring three poets Eileen Sheehan (formerly Eileen Flynn from Gortgloss), Breda Joy and John W. Sexton and they will relate how Sliabh Luachra has impacted in their works.

At 4pm there’s a song workshop with Christy Cronin. There will be various sessions in the pubs all evening and one of the best will be ‘The Sounds of Sliabh Luachra’4 with top musicians from the famed district taking part.

An event not to be missed is the closing World Fiddle Day concert in the Heritage Centre at 8pm. This is a very special celebratio­n of the fiddle playing and styles your area hosted by Tomás MacUileagó­id which will see the creme de la creme of fiddle players including such outstandin­g exponents as Matt Cranitch, Nicholas McAuliffe, Con Moynihan, Gerry Harrington, Emma O’ Leary, Connie O’ Connell and many many more. So those are just a few highlights of what’s going on at World Fiddle Day in Scartaglin -- be sure and pay a visit, there’s something there for everyone. GAA LOTTO DRAW

Scartaglin GAA Club’s latest Lotto Draw took place in Flemings Bar on Sunday May 7th . The jackpot was €8,400 and was not won. Numbers drawn were: 4,9,18,23.Consolatio­n prize-winners in the ‘Lucky Dip’ draw were as follows:€40 -- Conor O’ Donoghue, Cordal; €30 each to -Maurice Cronin, Coolnagera­gh, Ailish O’ Donoghue, c/o James ; €20 each to -- Anne Casey Scartaglin, Brian McEnery c/o Pat O’ Sullivan, Ruth Lyons c/o Garvey’s Castleisla­nd. The next draw will be in O’ Connor’s Bar on Sunday May 28th for a jackpot of €8,600.

AFTERNOON OF PRAYER

Denis O’ Leary will be present at the next Afternoon of Prayer in Our Lady of Lourdes Church Scartaglin on Sunday next May 21st which will commence with The Rosary at 2.30pm, followed by Divine Mercy at 3pm .All are welcome.

SUMMER WORKS SCHEME

Scartaglin National School is one of the twenty eight schools in Kerry which has been granted funding under the 2017 Summer Works Scheme. The Scheme provides for the carrying out of improvemen­t works in primary and post-primary schools.

PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA

Fr. Dan O’ Riordan will lead a pilgrimage to Fatima/ Algarve from September 11th to 18th. There will be four nights in Fatima and 3 nights in the Algarve. Anyone interested in travelling should contact Premier Travel on (021) 4277700.

KNOCK ROSARY RALLY

DEATH

The death occurred last week of Una Healy (nee O Sullivan) of Knockacorr­in and formerly of Kilbrean, Killarney. The late Una was pre-deceased by her husband Connie. She is survived by her daughters and sons. Burial took place in Kilsarcon Cemetery. May she Rest In Peace.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

This Saturday May 20th is First Holy Communion Day in Scartaglen and 18 young people from the parish will receive their First Holy Communion at a special mass which will be celebrated in Scartaglen church at 11am on the morning in question. We wish all a very happy, pleasant and joyful day on this happy occasion.

STROKE SUPPORT GROUP

Kerry Stroke Support Group are holding a Health and Well Being Day on Friday May 26th from 10.30am to 3pm in Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre Tralee for people who have had a stroke. There will be inputs from various medical and well being therapists including Dr. Richard Liston Consultant Geriatrici­an from Kerry University Hospital. CHURCH GATE COLLECTION

The church gate collection this weekend is the annual Diocesan collection for the education of clergy.
