THE talented troupe of actors in the Blackwater Women’s/Drama Group in Kenmare are this coming weekend getting set to stage a spectacular three night run of their original three act play, entitled ‘Going for the Boat’.

Running from the night of Friday May 19 to Sunday May 21, this new play is set in Blackwater in 1950 and will focus on the theme of emigration and how it impacts on family life and the dreams of young people.

This will be the acting groups seventh original play and they have promised a mixture of both fun and poignancy for the audience as the the play brings focus to the issues of the day; the search for employment, struggles of land ownership, the ‘American Dream’ and London where the streets were paved with ‘gold’.

Over the past number of years, the plays have been a firm fixture in the social calendars of the locals as they flock to the shows in numbers everty year ensuring a brilliant atmosphere and great local support on the night.

Hosted by Teddy and Mary O’Neill, the actors meet every Wednesday evening in the Blackwater Tavern, where they work together to create a story line, improvise dialogue and generate the final scripted play - this process is directed by writer and photographer Eileen O’Leary.

To say that the group is excited about the upcoming shows would be an understatement - such is the bubbling pot of anticipation currently brewing in the town; as many people as possible are being encouraged to come along for an evening of unforgettable entertainment, a chance to laugh and a chance to reminisce.

Tickets for the show are set to cost €10 and must be prebooked as seating is limited. To secure your place in plenty of time, members of the public must phone The Blackwater Tavern on 064-6682003 to book the tickets.

The doors will open at 7.30 and the performance will begin at 8pm sharp.
