A scenic Saturday cycle for Coolick NS

- By TADHG EVANS

FRESH from being selected as one of Ireland’s five most scenic cycle routes, this weekend’s Valley 70 Cycle is attracting understandable excitement.

John Herlihy of Killarney Cycling Club will be one of many pedalling the 70-kilometre route on Saturday, and he’s looking forward not only to cycle a loop that encircles Killarney’s famous lakes, but also to support Coolick National School.

“All monies raised on the Valley 70 Cycle will go to Coolick National School,” he explained.

“There’s so much to look forward to. Aidan O’Mahony will lead the cycle as we roll off towards Killarney from Kilcummin GAA Club at 9am sharp, and the route is challenging, but terrific.

“We’ll head out towards Fossa and enjoy the road to Kate Kearney’s Cottage, going through the likes of the Gap of Dunloe, the Black Valley, Moll’s Gap, Woodlawn, Spa, and back to the GAA club for food and refreshments – and a hot shower, if it’s needed!

“With over 50 stewards and road crew, it’s a well-marshalled affair, and there will be food before, during, and after the event. One of the highlights will be the now-famous barbecue at the finish line, and there will be a refuel stop at the top of the climb to the Sneem Road/Moll’s Gap,” John added.

To register, you can book your place online at valley70.weebly.com. Alternatively, you can also register at the GAA Club the night before, between 7pm and 9pm, or from 7.30am on the day of the cycle.

All cyclists must be over 16, and a helmet is required. Registration costs €20-per-person, or €35 for a family of four. Further details are available on The Valley 70 Cycle Facebook page.
