Casey and co delight at South Kerry variety

- By TADHG EVANS

COMEDIAN and Master of Ceremonies Bernard Casey had everyone in Portmagee Community Centre crying with laughter at Saturday night’s South Kerry Variety Show, but while his hilarious swipes added zest to the night, it was the many talented performers who dominated the south Kerry-based showcase.

Between Casey’s barbs and interesting views on the Portmagee-Valentia rivalry in particular, there was recitation, singing, storytelling, music, dancing, and even a Tina Turner tribute act to enjoy.

Ursula O’Shea was among the many people who put their backs into organising the night’s events with the intention of raising funds for Valentia Community Centre, and she was delighted with the wealth of talent on show.

“Bernard Casey seamlessly blended the whole evening together with funny stories and anecdotes, and I think seeing the hapless Caroline Heffernan hilariously roped in to one of his acts was definitely a highlight,” she said. “As far as performers go, we had a bit of everything, and we must thank all of them for putting on such a good show for us all.

“It was also nice to see Julia Cooper wowing everyone with the Sean Nós Dancing Skills that earned her a County Fleadh Cheoil silver medal, while fiddle-player and Fleadh gold-medallist Maeve Emmet joined her brother Emmet to play us a couple of tunes.”

Ursula went on to thank everyone who contributed to the show’s success in any way, shape, or form, and she explained that the funds collected will be well invested.

“It is great to have a full-size sports-hall, a well-equipped gym and a private meeting room available in Valentia Community Centre for everyone to use. We hope to continually upgrade our facilities so as to provide the best possible service to you, the people of South Kerry,” she said.
