AWARD WINNING YEAR FOR ISK
THE pupils of Intermediate School Killorglin are no strangers to success but the current academic year has been a little bit special. Gathering ahead of the annual awards ceremomy, some of the school’s Munster and, indeed, All-Ireland winners stood in for a photo shoot this week.
From the beginning of the academic year the students of the ISK have had outstanding achievements in a range of disciplines and extra- curricular activities. “More than half of our pupils gained over 400 points at Leaving Cert and 16 of those pupils achieved over 550 points,” Principal Joe O’Dwyer said.
“At Junior Cert level, a number of students were awarded the highest possible results of 10 A’s but we are proud of all our students’ achievements as we strive to embrace the talents of each individual.”
This year the school recently attained the prestigious Green Flag and has also been awarded the Health Promoting Schools Flag which will be celebrated in September along with the opening of an impressive new Science building.
The annual school show ‘All Shook up’ took place in December, while musicians from the ISK are taking part in a classical concert for emerging young talent in Kfest next weekend.
In sport, four boys represent Kerry at U17/ Minors while 10 girls represent Kerry on various underage teams. There were national awards too in Show Jumping and an All-Ireland Boxing Champion in Barry O’Connor, while the U16 Rowing crew also holds the All-Ireland Junior title.
There was a silver medal for the school’s Futsal team in Munster following success in Kerry, while the First Year Boys triumphed in the Munster Soccer Championship, bringing home the Collins Cup.
In Basketball, two students were chosen to represent Ireland at U17 Boys level and four represent Kerry.
The school’s wonderful sporting year reached a remarkable climax with the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams completing a memorable double in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, winning two All-Irelands in consecutive weeks.
Speaking of the staff at the ISK, Joe O’ Dwyer stated: “We are so lucky to have such talented coaches, teachers and volunteers who give so freely of their time. It is this generosity of spirit that culminates in such award winning success.”
